Sunday Comics | ‘Beetle Moses’ arrives on Comics Kingdom

Check out recent webcomics by Harris Fishman, Coleman Engle, Kay King and more.

Here’s a round up of some of the best and most interesting comics we’ve seen online recently. If we missed something, let us know in the comments below.

Beetle Moses, the quirky comic strip featuring a lot of animals and pop culture references by Harris Fishman, has debuted on Comics Kingdom.

If you aren’t familiar with Beetle Moses, well, you probably are, as it’s one of those strips that’s done well on social media and probably went across your feed at some point without you realizing it. It’s typically three stacked panels, so already it looks like a meme from the get go.

Fishman spoke with Canvas Rebel about it just a few weeks ago, and this quote resonated with me: I make webcomics, which as a medium have the benefit of being shareable since they are built for social media. Comics are an interesting artistic medium because it feels like they are often overlooked by creators of fine art, and also not respected as an art form by casual consumers. People who love comics know that neither of these mentalities are true, and that the world of comics is endlessly rich and saturated with incredible writers and artists. Webcomics fall into an even less respected niche, and there is some blame to go around. There’s a lot of same-y looking styles thanks to trends in oversimplification over the last decade. Webcomics are still a very new medium, and they differ slightly from printed comics in a few ways. Webcomic creators are still feeling out the ground floor to see exactly where webcomics can go. I think in some ways this freed me as a webcomic artist, since I had a few viral hits early on that broke the typical conventions of the contemporary “scene”. A lot of casual viewers still look at my social media accounts as a “meme page” and don’t consider that I’m one guy actually drawing these things. But that doesn’t discourage me at all. In fact, I think there are some amazing fine artists who would grow both on socials, and in their own creative journey by trying their hands at comics.

Check out an exclusive preview of two new stories coming in next week’s digest from Archie Comics.

All the Crusaders assemb — er, come together in a new story by Francis Bonnet and Rex Lindsey, who are joined by colorist Glenn Whitmore. It has more superheroes than you can shake a Crisis at, but not all is as it seems on Halloween in Riverdale …

The second story, also set on Halloween, features The WEB showing up at the Lodge mansion for a party — and then running away with a fortune. The Superteens have to figure out if this WEB is really The WEB or just an impersonator. It’s by Dan Parent, Bob Smith, Whitmore and Jack Morelli.

Check out both previews below, along with a classic Fall-themed Archie story.

Courtesy of Archie Comics, we’re pleased to present a preview of two new stories from World of Archie Jumbo Comics Digest #132, which comes out Aug. 9.

For the second story, Whitmore and Morelli worked with writer Tom DeFalco, artist Bill Galvan and inker Jim Amash on a Little Archie story featuring Captain Valor. This time our hero is teaching Archie self-defense just in time for a confrontation with the bully Fangs Fogarty.

Check out both preview below, along with a classic Little Archie story by Bob Bolling and Henry Scarpelli that features a baseball game against the Southside Serpents, an appearance by Chick Cooper and some visitors from another world.

Captain Commando offers Shark Fiend swimming lessons in this preview of ‘Betty and Veronica Jumbo Comics’ #316

Check out an exclusive preview of two new stories coming in next week’s digest from Archie Comics.

Archie Comics has shared a preview with us of Betty and Veronica Jumbo Comics #316, which will feature two new stories in addition to a whole lot of classic material.

In the first new story, Mr. Lodge has hired Captain Commando to endorse his new water park, and it’s a good thing he did, as Shark Fiend shows up to cause trouble. Writer Ian Flynn, artist Steven Butler, inker Lily Butler, colorist Glenn Whitmore and letterer Jack Morelli jump into the deep end for this one.

The second story features the return of Fu Chang, International Detective, as a classic video game cartridge goes missing from the Riverdale Museum. Not only does this one offer up a parody of Knives Out, but it also has some fun with the name of the video game that fans of Hyrule and Sabrina the Teenage Witch will appreciate. Writer Francis Bonnet and artist Rex Lindsey are joined by Whitmore on this one.

Check out both previews below, along with a complete classic story featuring Betty Cooper.

When a few of the extras on the set acting as criminals turn out to be the real thing, Fu Chang steps into action. This one is by writer Francis Bonnet, with art and letters by Rex Lindsey and colors by Glenn Whitmore.

In the second one, the Boy Buddies are back to help out Little Archie and his pals against Mad Dr. Doom, who uses an app on people’s phones to hypnotize them. Dan Parent wrote and drew this completely fictional tale, with inks by Bob Smith, colors by Glenn Whitmore and letters by Jack Morelli.

Check out both previews below, along with a classic Little Archie story by Bob Bolling and Chic Stone.

Little Betty & Veronica team with the Boy Buddies in ‘Betty & Veronica Jumbo Comics Digest’ #311

Check out an exclusive preview of two new stories coming in next week’s digest from Archie Comics.

Courtesy of Archie Comics, we’re pleased to present a preview of Betty & Veronica Jumbo Comics Digest #311, which comes out Feb. 8.

Today we have previews of two new stories that will appear in the digest, starting with “Operation: Brainbust” by Tom DeFalco, Bill Galvan and Ben Galvan. It features a team-up between Little Betty and Veronica and the superhero sidekick team known as the Boy Buddies. Roy the Super-Boy and Dusty the Amazing Boy Detective are showing the two girls around the campus of the Montgomery Military Academy when they notice someone up to no good.

The second story, “Ransomware Beware,” is by Francis Bonnet and Rex Lindsey. In this one, Lodge Industries has to deal with a ransomware attack, and the girls bring in Detective Fu Chang to help Mr. Lodge with his dilemma.

Below you’ll find previews of both stories, plus a complete classic Betty & Veronica story featuring a snowstorm (which hits home today considering I’m currently surrounded by a frozen wasteland in Texas). Enjoy!

Fu Chang returns in ‘Archie Jumbo Comics Digest’ #337

Check out an exclusive preview of two new stories coming in next week’s digest from Archie Comics.

Today, courtesy of Archie Comics, we’re pleased to present a preview of Archie Jumbo Comics Digest #337, which comes out Feb. 2.

The digest will contain two new stories, the first by Francis Bonnet, Rex Lindsey and Glenn Whitmore. It features the return of Fu Chang, the Golden Age detective from the 1940s who solved crime in San Francisco. He’s also the inspiration for Jake Chang, the new Archie character introduced earlier this year who will star in his own show on The CW.

The second story features Little Archie and the Boy Buddies, aka Roy and Dusty, AKA the sidekicks of the Wizard and the Shield. They’re investigating Grimloch Island, which is rumored to be haunted, but really a friend of Little Archie lives there and could do without the company. I like how people refer to Little Archie as “Little Archie” instead of just “Archie,” like the “Little” isn’t implied. This one is by Tom DeFalco, Bill Galvan and Ben Galvan, with Whitmore once again on colors and Jack Morelli on letters.

Below you’ll find previews of both stories, plus a complete classic Little Archie story by Dexter Taylor featuring dinosaurs. Enjoy!
