Spider-Man is older, ‘wiser,’ a husband + dad in ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’

Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto’s new series will give Spider-Man’s marriage more than one more day.

Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto’s Ultimate Spider-Man will “zag” instead of “zig” when it debuts in January. Instead of taking the approach of the original Ultimate Universe, where Spider-Man was rebooted as a teenager, they plan to present an older Spider-Man, who is married with a family.

So it’s more Renew Your Vows, less Miles Morales.

“When we decided that we were going to do a book about an older Peter Parker becoming Spider-Man, we really wanted to lean into him starting his super hero life from a very different place than what’s traditionally expected,” Hickman told Marvel.com. “Peter and MJ being married is one of many decisions we made that underline this being quite a ‘different’ kind of Spider-Man story.”

Comic strip news: Flash Gordon returns, Spider-Man canceled

Dan Schkade takes over Flash Gordon, bringing us new strips for the first time in 20 years.

This Sunday the Flash Gordon comic strip returned with new strips for the first time since 2003, both online and in print.

King Features has enlisted Dan Schkade, creator of Lavender Jack, to write and draw the strip. For the last 20 years King Features has offered reruns of the strip, as drawn by Jim Keefe (which can still be found online).

“The initial version of Flash I pitched was a little more purposefully a himbo,” Schkade told the Washington Post. Schkade won a competitive tryout earlier this year to take over the strip, and he agreed to make Flash less of a himbo and “a more classic, straightforward hero.”

‘Cable’ suits up for the final battle of the Krakoa era

In a new miniseries, longtime Cable writer Fabian Nicieza and artist Scot Eaton bring together Cable and … Cable?

As a part of the Fall of House of X storyline that will effectively end the Krakoa era of X-Men comics next year, Marvel has announced Cable by Fabian Nicieza and Scot Eaton.

Nicieza has a long history with the character, having written him in the early days of X-Force as well as in the well-remembered Cable and Deadpool series. He and Eaton will have two Cables to play with, as grizzled veteran Cable teams with the younger Cable introduced a few years back to fight Orchis and a new threat called the Neocracy.

“It’s always fun to write Cable and challenge him with a big physical and emotional conflict,” Nicieza said. “Having written him more than anyone else on the planet, it’s also fun to add to that total!”

After Krakoa falls, the ‘Dead X-Men’ rise

Steve Foxe, Vincenzo Carratù, Bernard Chang and Jonas Scharf send a group of dead mutants back in time to save their world.

This past weekend brought news on the future — or lack of one — for the X-Men’s Krakoa era, and following the big reveal of three new miniseries that will tie everything up, Marvel has announced a fourth tie-in miniseries — Dead X-Men.

There’s probably a joke to make here about the past three or so years under the Krakoa banner and its resurrection protocols — I mean, aren’t most of the X-Men technically dead at this point, with cloned copies walking around with their memories? But I digress …

Steve Foxe and a host of artists have been tapped for a Terminator-esque story where Professor X sends a group of five X-Men back in time to try and prevent the destruction of Krakoa, as detailed in this year’s Hellfire Gala special.

Dead X-Men is one of the most complex stories I’ve worked on at Marvel, but also one of purest: a small group of mutants who have to accomplish the impossible, which is the premise that made me fall in love with the X-Men in the first place,” Foxe said. He’ll be working with several artists on the series, including Vincenzo Carratù, Bernard Chang and Jonas Scharf.

Marvel announces three more ‘Ultimate’ titles for 2024

Peach Momoko, Bryan Hill, Stefano Caselli and more will contribute to the resurrected Ultimate Universe.

Marvel’s Ultimate Universe, which was reincarnated in the recent Ultimate Invasion miniseries, will grow next year with three new titles, following the Ultimate Universe one-shot coming Nov. 1.

Spider-Man, Black Panther and the X-Men will get new Ultimate titles in this “world outside your window” approach architected by Jonathan Hickman.

“What made the Ultimate Universe originally really interesting was that it was a reflection of the world outside your window, in the moment that you were living in. What does it look like in the world we’re living in now?” Hickman said back in June. “It’s kind of shocking how much the world has changed in that period of time. The idea of what it would be like to see the genesis of super heroes in a brand-new world is a really fascinating exercise.”

Hickman himself will write one of the titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, while Bryan Hill will write the first-ever Ultimate Black Panther series.

Zdarsky + Acuna avenge the future in ‘Avengers: Twilight’

The new miniseries begins in January.

If you’ve been wondering what’s next for Daredevil scribe Chip Zdarsky at Marvel, today’s The Next Big Thing panel at New York Comic Con brought some good news — he’s teaming up with artist Daniel Acuna for a “final” story starring the Avengers.

In the vein of Marvel’s “The End” projects, this one will feature a future world where the Avengers no longer exist — but Steve Rogers does.

The Krakoan Age will conclude in two new X-Men miniseries

Marvel announces ‘Fall of the House of X’ and ‘Rise of the Powers of X’ at the New York Comic Con.

All good things, as they say. The Krakoan Age, the current era of X-Men comics that began in 2019 when Jonathan Hickman returned to Marvel for House of X and Powers of X, will come to its official end next year in two miniseries announced today at New York Comic Con.

Fall of the House of X by Gerry Duggan and Lucas Werneck, will continue the story of Cyclops and his capture during Fall of X, as he’s put on trial and faces the death penalty. Rise of the Powers of X by Kieron Gillen and R.B. Silva takes place in the future as mutants attempt to stop Omega Sentinel and Nimrod from summoning “their binary god to consume everything in their accession.”

As they’ve done before, Mark Brooks and Richard Isanove supply the teaser image, which showcases Marvel mutants in various costumes from the comic’s history:

‘Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver’ rushes into shops this February

The twin Avengers/former mutants team up again just in time for their 60th anniversary.

A few weeks ago, Marvel teased that the ongoing Scarlet Witch title would evolve in a “fascinating way.” During New York Comic Con this weekend, Marvel revealed that following the final issue of Scarlet Witch, the creative team of Steve Orlando and Lorenzo Tammetta will move to a new title — Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver.

Orlando’s work on Scarlet Witch has been (heh) magical, as he’s created a fun, new status quo and new villains for the character. So it’s great to see him continue to write her.

The four-issue miniseries will feature covers by Russell Dauterman, who drew the covers for the 10 issues of Wanda’s solo title. The title comes just in time for the 60th anniversary of both characters, who first appeared in those early X-Men issues by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. And like always, there’s a bit of tension between the two.
