Return to the world of ‘The Last Ronin’ with ‘The Lost Years’

The popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles storyline gets a sequel in November.

IDW’s The Last Ronin, a sort-of “Old Man Logan” take on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, proved to be a huge success for the publisher, with a reported 840,000 copies in print, not to mention a hardcover collection that just came out. So naturally it’s getting a sequel — Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin–The Lost Years.

Kevin Eastman will once again work with Tom Waltz on the story, with SL Gallant and Ben Bishop illustrating it.

“Continuing to expand on an idea Peter Laird and I had 35 years ago with this incredible creative team has been the adventure of a lifetime,” said Eastman. “To continue exploring and telling stories within the Last Ronin universe couldn’t possibly be more exciting for me. I’m so thrilled we get to stay and play here for a while and I can’t wait to share everything we have planned. Buckle up, TMNT fans! We’ve got two turtle universes that are both about to get seriously awesome!”

Static returns for a second season in ‘Shadows of Dakota’

Check out preview pages from the new miniseries as well as the upcoming graphic novel ‘Static: Up All Night.’

During the Jim Lee & Friends panel in San Diego yesterday, DC’s publisher and CCO welcomed Milestone founder and legendary artist Denys Cowan to the stage to announce a second Static miniseries titled Static: Shadows of Dakota.

Vita Ayala and Nikolas Draper-Ivey will once again tell Virgil Hawkins’ story and introduce a villain called Ebon. Here’s a look at the cover:

Here’s a look at the Paul Dano/Stevan Subic ‘The Riddler: Year One’ project

Jim Lee and Paul Dano shared a preview during the San Diego Comic-Con yesterday.

As revealed during the Jim Lee & Friends panel in San Diego yesterday, DC has released preview pages and variant covers for The Riddler: Year One, the upcoming Black Label project by actor Paul Dano and artist Stevan Subic.

According to DC, “Dano’s story provides an in-depth look at how the unknown forensic accountant Edward Nashton evolved into the menace known as the Riddler and came so close to bringing down the entire city.” Dano of course played the character in The Batman.

‘The Maze Agency’ reopens its doors at Scout Comics

Mike W. Barr and Silvano Beltramo will bring back the 1980s detective series.

The Maze Agency, the 1980s comic created and written by Mike W. Barr, has found its way to a new home — Scout Comics, who announced this weekend that they will publish new stories featuring detectives Jennifer Mays and Gabriel Webb.

First self-published by Barr with art by Alan Davis, The Maze Agency debuted at Comico in 1988 with artwork by Adam Hughes and Rick Magyar. Over the years it has been published by Innovation, Caliber and IDW, among others. This new series will feature artwork by Silvano Beltramo.

“I’m delighted that The Maze Agency has again found a home at Scout Comics,” Barr said.  “Of all the features I’ve created, Maze is my favorite, and I hope that shows in the scripts.  Silvano Beltramo loves the characters and has an ideal ability to draw the urban world in which Maze lives.”

Dark Horse announces a Criminal Macabre/Count Crowley crossover

Steve Niles, David Dastmalchian, Lukas Ketner and Lauren Affe will bring their two monster hunters together.

Legendary horror writer Steve Niles will team up with the crew behind Count Crowley for a monster-sized crossover in October — Criminal Macabre/Count Crowley: From The Pit They Came.

Niles will co-write the comic with David Dastmalchian, while artist Lukas Ketner and colorist Lauren Affe will bring the story to life.

“Working with David and Lukas has been a thrill and way too much fun,” said Niles. “Everything came together so smoothly by the time we were finished I wanted to keep going. I hope people enjoy the crossover half as much as I enjoyed working on it.”

J.M. DeMatteis returns to Spider-Man + Kraven for ‘The Lost Hunt’

Eder Messias will provide the art for the five-issue miniseries.

J.M. DeMatteis, who wrote one of the best and most popular Spider-Man stories of all time, “Kraven’s Last Hunt,” will return to both characters in a new miniseries in November.

Like many of Marvel’s recent projects, Spider-Man: The Lost Hunt isn’t set in the present day Marvel U. — it’s set around the time of Spider-Man: The Final Adventure, when Ben Reilly took over as Spider-Man in New York and a powerless Peter Parker settled down with Mary Jane on the opposite coast. A run-in with a man from Kraven’s past will allow DeMatteis to “dive into Kraven’s origins, revealing secrets and answering mysteries Spidey fans have been waiting for.”

Your 2022 Eisner Award winners

Barry Windsor-Smith, Phil Jimenez, James Tynion IV and more take home awards.

The winners were announced tonight in San Diego for the 2022 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards. After two years of filmed ceremonies due to the COVID pandemic, the awards show returned to its traditional, multi-hour live show hosted during Comic-Con.

Barry Windsor Smith took home multiple awards for his graphic novel Monsters, including Best Lettering, Best Graphic Album – New and Best Writer/Artist, while James Tynion IV received awards for Best Continuing Series (Something is Killing the Children), Best Limited Series (The Nice House by the Lake) and for Best Writer. Other multiple award winners included Phil Jimenez and You Died: An Anthology of the Afterlife.

Inductees into the Hall of Fame included six chosen by the judges: Marie Duval, Rose O’Neill, Max Gaines, Mark Gruenwald, Alex Nino and P. Craig Russell, and six chosen by voters: Howard Chaykin, Kevin Eastman, Moto Hagio, David Mazzucchelli, Grant Morrison and Larry Hama.

Several other awards were presented during the ceremony. Bob Bolling and Don Rico received the 2022 Bill Finger Award, while Annie Koyama received the 2022 Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award. The Spirit of Comics Retailer Award was given to Books and Pictures in Portland, Oregon. And Luana Vecchio won the Russ Manning Most Promising Newcomer Award.

‘Batman: Gotham Knights’ video game gets a prequel comic

‘Gilded City’ follows a mysterious virus that turns Gotham’s citizens into maniacs.

During Comic-Con today DC announced a prequel comic for their upcoming video game, Batman: Gotham Knights. Subtitled Gilded City, the comic is written by Evan Narcisse with art by ABEL.

The game features Nightwing, Red Hood, Batgirl and Robin in a Batman-less Gotham City. And following in the footsteps of the recent Batman crossover with Fortnite, each issue of the six-issue series will feature a code for in-game items.

Marvel announces ‘Doctor Strange: Fall Sunrise’

Tradd Moore writes and draws a new miniseries this fall featuring the sorcerer supreme.

Tradd Moore, creator of Silver Surfer Black and artist of Luther Strode, will bring his unique style to a new miniseries featuring Doctor Strange.

Written and drawn by Moore, Doctor Strange: Fall Sunrise #1 is a four-issue miniseries, which will feature wraparound covers by Moore:

Lee, McFarlane + Capullo reunite at SDCC to announce Batman/Spawn

The first crossover in more than 25 years between the two characters will arrive in December.

DC’s “Jim Lee & Friends” panel at San Diego Comic-Con brought a lot of interesting news and some surprise special guests — not the least of which was Todd McFarlane, Lee’s former Image Comics partner.

Along with artist Greg Capullo — who has a long history with both Batman and Spawn — they announced a new Batman/Spawn crossover project.

Batman/Spawn #1, a 48-page one-shot, will arrive in shops Dec. 13. Unfortunately they haven’t shared any artwork from it, but I’m sure that’s coming soon.

Claremont + Larroca return to ‘X-Treme X-Men’

X-treme ways are back again.

Chris Claremont and Salvador Larroca will return to their extreme ways with a new X-Treme X-Men miniseries set right after their initial run on the title.

X-Treme X-Men was first published back in 2001 for almost 50 issues, and then returned in 2012 with an Exiles-like story that brought together mutants from around the multiverse. But you don’t have to worry about that second volume, because this one picks up right after the first volume.

“I’m very happy to be teaming up with Chris again to bring back the adventures of the X-Treme X-Men!” Larroca said. “It’s been a long time and I’ve missed this team and this book that I consider a child of mine. I hope fans enjoy what we’re doing with this new run—there’s lots of new histories to tell. This is the book that Chris Claremont fans have been waiting for and I’m proud to once again illustrate his awesome plots. Let’s make this an instant classic!”

South Korean superteam Tiger Division leaps into its own miniseries

Emily Kim and Creees Lee will chronicle new adventures for the team starting in November.

Following their introduction last year in Black Cat and Taskmaster, South Korean superheroes Tiger Division will debut in their own miniseries later this year. The five-issue series will be written by Emily Kim and drawn by Creees Lee.  

“I’m so excited to be launching Tiger Division’s first limited series,” Kim said. “As a lifelong fan of comics, I never thought I’d get the chance to write for an all-Korean group. Hopefully it’s not the last and there will be many more Tiger Division stories to come.”
