The Lucasfilm Publishing panel at the San Diego Comic-Con today revealed that Indiana Jones will raid lost arks once again in the pages of a comic. Indiana Jones and the Sword of Pandemonium, a new five-issue miniseries by writer Jason Aaron and artist Aaron Kuder, will kick off a new era of Indy comics set during the original film trilogy.
Aaron is no stranger to working on Lucasfilm Properties, having helped launch a new era of Star Wars comics in 2015.
“I’ve wanted to adventure alongside Indiana Jones since I was 8 years old, to climb through ancient crypts and run for my life in exotic locales, to seek the world’s most fabled treasures. Now, here I am, feeling the same sort of joy I felt in 2015 when we launched Star Wars #1,” Aaron said. “This is the Indy of Raiders of the Lost Ark, fresh off his harrowing experience on the island of Geheimhaven. Dark events were set in motion that day, strange new enemies have risen from the shadows, and for Indy and Marion Ravenwood, the globe-trotting, punching, whip-cracking, and death-defying escapades, not to mention the archaeology, have just begun.”

In the wake of Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indy’s most notorious villains, including the impossible return of an archenemy, seek a terrifying new source of power to recoup their loss—one that’s fallen into the hands of his former companion, Marion Ravenwood. Now, Indiana Jones has to race to the far corners of the globe in search of a biblical weapon, embarking on an epic quest that will put both his archeology skills and skepticism of the supernatural to the ultimate test!

For this new Indy series, I wanted to take a cue from that 2015 STAR WARS launch and shoot for something that feels weighty and important, not in any way a throwaway adventure, but instead something that represents a fundamental part of Indy’s journey and development. For that, we’ve made this comic more of a sequel to RAIDERS in some ways, as Indy and Marion Ravenwood wrestle with the emotional fall-out of what happened to them on the island of Geheimhaven, when the Ark was opened. New enemies have risen in the wake of those events, and Indy and Marion are soon dragged into another globe-trotting quest, seeking a lost book of ancient evil that leads the way to a mysterious sword of incredible power, the power of hell itself. Expect some familiar faces along with new exotic locales, including places with a real-life historical connection to the idea of the underworld. You’ll see the emotional repercussions of RAIDERS mixed with a bit of the darkness of TEMPLE OF DOOM, wrapped up in a classic, free-wheeling Indiana Jones style adventure. Nazis will be punched! Whips will be cracked! Indy will run for his life, probably many times! There may even be some actual archaeology, you never know!
The series follows Marvel’s recently announced Indiana Jones: The Further Adventures deluxe hardcovers, arriving in September and collecting the character’s 1980s comics published by Marvel from creators like David Michelinie, Walt Simonson, John Byrne, John Buscema and many more. The first volume gathers the Marvel Super Special adaptations of Raiders of the Lost Ark and Temple of Doom alongside The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones #1-16. The second volume collects Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade #1-4 and The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones #17-34.
