IDW announces a ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin’ sequel

Kevin Eastman, Tom Waltz, Ben Bishop and company will continue the story in ‘Re-Evolution.’

Casey Marie Jones and the next generation of Ninja Turtles will return for another round of turtle power in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin II – Re-Evolution.

The next chapter is co-written by TMNT co-creator Eastman and Tom Waltz, illustrated by Ben Bishop, Esau Escorza and Isaac Escorza, colored by Luis Antonio Delgado and lettered by Shawn Lee.

“The real heart and soul for me with dusting off and bringing The Last Ronin to life three years ago was my belief that ‘Every beginning must have an end,’” said Eastman. “With all the respect in the world for my co-creator Peter Laird, I wanted to bring full circle to what we started in 1984 and set out to do in 1987. With The Last Ronin, with my friend Tom Waltz and an incredible gathering of brilliant artisans, we accomplished that 33 years later. A very fitting end indeed.”

Space Usagi hunts Yokai in a new one-shot this October

Stan Sakai and Emi Fujii channel the supernatural in this outer space tale.

Stan Sakai will return to the future version of his popular ronin rabbit in Space Usagi: Yokai Hunter this fall.

The full-color one-shot by Sakai and colorist Emi Fujii, who is coloring the current Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Usagi Yojimbo: WhereWhen miniseries, will find Usagi facing supernatural horrors in outer space. It will be published by Dark Horse Comics under Sakai’s Dogu Publishing imprint.

‘Superior Spider-Man’ will return as an ongoing series

Dan Slott and Mark Bagley will plot a new course for the character following the 10th anniversary one-shot.

Following the news from earlier in the week that Marvel would celebrate the 10th anniversary of Superior Spider-Man with a one-shot, the publisher announced in San Diego this weekend plans for a new Superior Spider-Man ongoing series.

Dan Slott and Mark Bagley will chart a new path for Doctor Octopus and Peter Parker, springing from their recent work on Spider-Man.

Beast Boy leads the pack in ‘Titans: Beast World’

The crossover event will spin out of Tom Taylor and Nicola Scott’s work on ‘Titans.’

When an interstellar Sea Star that rivals Starro the Conqueror threatens Earth, one hero will step up to save the world — Beast Boy.

In San Diego today, DC announced Titans: Beast World, a crossover event spinning out of Tom Taylor and Nicola Scott’s work on Titans. The event will begin in Tales of the Titans #4, which spotlights Beast Boy, and will continue through Janaury.

“I’m beyond excited to bring this DC crossover event to life starting in November with our new Titans: Beast World series, featuring art by the incomparable Ivan Reis. ‘Beast World’ will also thread the needle between the current series that I’m writing about the Titans,” said Taylor. “Friends will fall. Super Heroes will rise. And nothing will ever be the same again. Earth is about to become…Beast World.”

Horror gets personal in ‘Something Crawled Out’ by Son M. + MadCursed

The new Vault Comics title, announced today in San Diego, will arrive in October.

Son M. and Cas ‘MadCursed’ Peirano will get up close and personal with horror in a new title from Vault that will debut this fall. Something Crawled Out will introduce a woman who enlists her best friend to help find her missing sister — only for her to start to suspect her best friend is the Devil himself.

The new title is colored by Vittorio Astone, lettered by Jim Campbell and designed by Tim Daniel.

“Love is a violent thing. I’ve always been obsessed with the inherent connection between brutality and beauty, and the way we express our relationships in different ways” said Son M. “Something Crawled Out is about two desperate people trying to save someone they love, and thus committing unspeakable acts of violence onto others along the way. I’ve always wanted to write horror that was so tied to expressions of the Final Girl trope, mixed with the active presence of the Hunter. Rather than reacting to the tragedies around her, Eddie is constantly causing devastation in her desperation to find her sister.”

David Pepose and Dave Wachter introduce a new Punisher this fall

A retired SHIELD agent will take up the mantle, becoming ‘the Danny Ketch to Frank’s Johnny Blaze.’

Spencer & Locke co-creator and former Savage Avengers writer David Pepose will team with Planet of the Apes artist Dave Wachter on a new Punisher series, as a retired SHIELD agent named Joe Garrison takes up the mantle once held by Frank Castle.

“The man might be different, but the punishment remains the same,” said Pepose. “I wanted to introduce the Danny Ketch to Frank’s Johnny Blaze.”

Now that is a great analogy. If you read the recent Jason Aaron-written Punisher series, you know (SPOILER!) that Frank Castle has moved on from this earthly plain. No, he isn’t dead, but he’s on Weirdworld, helping kids and not being the Punisher. So now someone new is stepping into the role.

Ridley + Raffaele bring ‘The Ministry of Compliance’ to IDW

An alien conspiracy goes wrong in the new IDW Originals series, which debuts in November.

John Ridley and Stefano Raffaele, the team behind DC’s GCPD: The Blue Wall, will re-team for a conspiracy-laden action series from IDW. The Ministry of Compliance will feature a secret cabal of aliens who are running the world who believe they’re doing the right thing for humanity — but what happens when they start fighting amongst themselves?

They’re joined by colorist Brad Anderson on the IDW Originals series.

“I’ve been real fortunate to have had many ‘phases’ in my career, from starting out writing on The Martin Show all the way up to 12 Years A Slave and everything that flowed from it. But there’s always going to be part of me which is the kid who fell in love with storytelling by way of comic books. And to be real this is the craft that brings me the most joy. The trio of Avigail, Quinn and Kingsley are easily my three favorite characters in thirty-plus years of creating,” Ridley said.

Nightcrawler’s origin gets a long overdue clean-up this fall

Si Spurrier and Wilton Santos will spotlight Nightcrawler and Mystique in ‘X-Men Origins Blue.’

During the Designing the X-Men panel in San Diego, Marvel announced a couple of new projects related to their merry mutants.

The first is X-Men Origins Blue, which arrives in November. The one-shot will delve into the origins of both Nightcrawler and Mystique, and, knock on wood, will retcon the terrible retcons made to the character in the early 2000s. It’s by Si Spurrier and Wilton Santos, and Spurrier’s quote offers a glimmer of hope in the right direction.

“It’s not often you get the chance to shine new light into the origins of a truly beloved character. To do so for two at once is an unprecedented privilege,” Spurrier said. “With this book, we’re breaking new ground in more ways than one. We’re walking this path with the deepest love for Nightcrawler and Mystique, and the deepest respect for the formative stories that surround them.”

‘Outsiders’ get a ‘Planetary’-style makeover in a new series

Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly will helm the new series, which starts in November.

At a panel in San Diego today focused on all things Gotham, writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly revealed they’re working on a new Outsiders title, which will feature Batwoman and Luke Fox (aka Batwing).

But hey, if you get some Planetary vibes from the main cover — the old Wildstorm title by Warren Ellis and John Cassaday — you aren’t alone. Not only does the series feature a new version of The Drummer, but Luke Fox seems to be sporting an Elijah Snow-esque ensemble:

Atomic cowboys ride again in ‘The Man From Maybe’ by Shaky Kane + Jordan Thomas

“… you’ll YEE-HAW! for sure when you pick this one up …”

Jordan Thomas and Shaky Kane are already shaking up the detective genre with their L.A. Confidential meets Futurama series Weird Work, and next they’re taking aim at a post-apocalyptic western in The Man From Maybe, which was announced today at the San Diego Comic Con by Oni Press.

“Saddle-up the Atomic Hoss, turn Grandma’s TV up to full retina burn, and head out across the wasteland,” said Kane. “There’s no maybe about it, you’ll YEE-HAW! for sure when you pick this one up. Some of the treats Jordan served up surprised even me, and I drew the dang thing!”

Each of the three issues of the miniseries will run 48 pages and will feature a “high potency dose of eye-searing, shoot-’em-up action on the high plains of our ruined planet.”

Ahmed + Ferreyra return to ‘Spine-Tingling Spider-Man’ in October

The Marvel Unlimited series gets a print sequel just in time for Halloween.

Following a collection of the Marvel Unlimited series in September, Marvel will release a new four-issue Spine-Tingling Spider-Man miniseries starting in October.

The digital series by writer Saladin Ahmed and artist Juan Ferreyra put Peter Parker through the ringer, and it looks like it only gets worse for the wall-crawler as he ends up powerless in a haunted house.

“We’re putting Peter through a grueling horror movie grinder, and that resilient spirit of his will be tested like never before,” Ahmed said. “I tapped into some darkness writing this, but the real star here is Juan’s mind-blowing, visionary work—which is genuinely some of the best Spider-art I’ve ever seen.”

‘Giant Robot Hellboy’ is exactly what it sounds like

And that word would be ‘awesome,’ as Mike Mignola and Duncan Fegredo pit Hellboy against giant monsters.

Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and artist Duncan Fegredo will team with colorist Dave Stewart and letterer Clem Robins for what could end up being the most brilliant Hellboy story of all time — Giant Robot Hellboy.

The project was inspired by Mignola’s pencil drawings from Mike Mignola: The Quarantine Sketchbook — as well as his fellow artists Geof Darrow and Art Adams.

“Giant Robot Hellboy is my very obvious nod to all those Japanese giant monster movies—which I actually have no particular love for. What I DO love is listening to Geof Darrow and Art Adams TALK about those movies—so really, I guess this series was inspired by those guys,” Mignola said. “I had the idea for this one a long time ago but figured it was too silly to actually do—then the pandemic came along and I started to do all those sketches I would post online. I had never given a serious thought to what a giant robot Hellboy would look like but I knocked out a few sketches and I liked them—and so the thing started to seem like something that could actually be done.”

While Mignola did the initial sketches, he felt like the idea would work better with a different artist.

“But I knew I wasn’t the artist for it and I knew both Arthur and Geof were busy with other things, so the only other artist I thought of was Duncan,” he said. “I had no idea how Duncan would respond. Too silly? I didn’t know,  but I figured I’d pitch it to him and if he said no that would be an end to it. The rest is history.”
