Can’t Wait for Comics | Things get spooky in this week’s new releases

New comics arrive this week from Steve Orlando, Cian Tormey, John McCrea, Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, Christopher Sebela and more.

Welcome to Can’t Wait for Comics, your guide to what comics are arriving in comic book stores, bookstores and on digital this week. And this week things get spookier than normal as your favorite comic companies start releasing all sorts of horror and Halloween-themed comics. I’ve even got previews of a couple of them.

Archie celebrates the holidays with ‘Archie’s Holiday Magic Special’

The anthology will feature stories by Micol Ostow, Michael Northrop, J. Torres, Gretel Lusky and more.

Archie and the gang will be simply having a wonderful Christmastime this December in the Archie’s Holiday Magic Special.

The anthology will feature three new stories by Micol Ostow, Michael Northrop, J. Torres, Gretel Lusky, Arielle Jovellanos, Dan Schoening and more. It’ll feature stories set in the worlds of “Little Archie” and “Life With Archie.”

“We were definitely inspired by the Archie reboot series from Mark Waid and Fiona Staples, and feel-good Hallmark movies for this fun and heartwarming anthology,” Archie’s Senior Director of Editorial Jamie L. Rotante said. “We think it’s a perfect way to celebrate 80 years of Archie by taking a trip through different eras of Archie’s life as he ultimately rediscovers the importance of friendship and community during the holiday season.

Archie + Webtoon will launch ‘Big Ethel Energy’ on Sept. 21

Keryl Brown Ahmed and Siobhan Keenan team up for a new webcomic about Ethel’s life after leaving Riverdale.

Archie Comics and Webtoon have announced the first webcomic they plan to release as part of a deal between the two companies that was shared at last year’s New York Comic Con.

Big Ethel Energy, which will feature an older version of the character Ethel, will launch on Sept. 21. It’s by writer Keryl Brown Ahmed and artist Siobhan Keenan.

”We’re so excited for this partnership with Webtoon,” said Archie Comics Senior Director of Editorial Jamie L. Rotante. “The work they’ve been doing is incredible, and the modern sensibilities they bring to their storytelling, along with the gorgeous and colorful art, aligns perfectly with Archie’s vision. It’s been amazing working with Webtoon and watching the evolution of Ethel take shape.”

Archie celebrates 10 years of Kevin Keller with a crowdfunded omnibus

Dan Parent spearheads a Kickstarter campaign for a collection of Kevin Keller stories.

Dan Parent, a veteran Archie Comics artist and creator of Kevin Keller, is celebrating 10 years of the character with Kevin Keller Celebration!, a 700-page omnibus collecting stories featuring the character, from his first appearance to the Life with Kevin graphic novel that showed the character’s future.

The project is current being crowdfunded on Kickstarter, where they’re looking for almost $50,000 in support.

“For the past 35 years, I’ve had the pleasure to work on multiple characters and titles for Archie, but my heart always comes back to my heart and soul, Kevin Keller,” Parent said. “Being able to spearhead this campaign with the support of Archie Comics is the perfect way to continue the legacy of the character as well as celebrate the 80th anniversary of Archie Comics.”

Archie announces ‘Chilling Adventures in Sorcery’ for November

The anthology will feature the return of Madam Satan and other horror stories by a variety of creators.

Archie Comics has announced a new anthology, Chilling Adventures in Sorcery, that will make its debut in November.

Jamie L. Rotante, who became senior director of editorial for Archie earlier this year, is overseeing the anthology, which is described as an expansion of last year’s Madam Satan one-shot.

“This horror anthology is the perfect love letter to both classic Archie tales and the more modern stories,” said Rotante. “The genre lends itself to have a timeless appeal to audiences and I believe that plays a factor into the excitement for Archie horror comics.”

Archie Comics announces two Sabrina projects

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will return to write ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ as well as a new series that spins out of the Netflix series.

Sabrina the Teenage Witch turns 60 this year, and to celebrate, Archie Comics has announced two projects written by Riverdale television series creator and showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.

First up is the return of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, the Archie Horror series that re-imagined the character and established her “satanic horror roots” that eventually made their way into the Netflix series. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina #9 picks right back up where the series paused in 2017 with the “Witch War” storyline. Aguirre-Sacasa will team up once again with artist Robert Hack and letterer Jack Morelli.

“Bringing Sabrina and her family and friends to life on the screen for Netflix was a dark dream come true, and I couldn’t be prouder of our four seasons, but it all started with a comic book series that was truly a labor of love for everyone who worked on it,” said Aguirre-Sacasa. “Reuniting with Robert Hack and the entire Archie Comics team and getting to pick up where we left off has been the best homecoming I could have ever asked for.”

Archie will include new stories with their classic releases starting in September

In addition, expect news on their horror line and other projects next month.

Archie fans will soon get new content in the classic reprints the company regularly release, “in an effort to add extra value and collectibility to Archie’s all-ages offerings in the comic shop market,” according to the publisher.

The publisher will add five-page stories to these release starting in September with Betty & Veronica Friends Forever: Halloween Spooktacular #1.

“That includes both bi-monthly sister series Archie & Friends and Betty & Veronica Friends Forever, as well as our annual Archie Halloween Spectacular and Archie Christmas Spectacular specials,” said Archie Comics Director of Publicity & Social Media Ron Cacace. “We’re keeping these comics priced at $2.99 but adding extra value to them in the form of these all-new stories, which we hope fans will appreciate. We’ll continue to feature recently published stories from our digest line and classic material from our back catalog in these titles, making each issue a perfect assortment of fun Archie Comics reading for people of all ages to enjoy.”

Smash Pages Q&A: Fred Van Lente on ‘Everything’s Archie’

The writer of ‘Action Philosophers,’ ‘MODOK’s 11’ and more discusses his work on Archie’s 80th anniversary one-shot, which arrives in stores next week.

Fred Van Lente is well known as the writer behind Action Philosophers, The Comic Book History of Comics, Archer and Armstrong, MODOK’S 11 and many more. He’s written novels like The Con Artist and Ten Dead Comedians, and he co-wrote the play King Kirby, which premiered earlier this year as a podcast.

Van Lente is also the writer of the new comic Everything’s Archie. The one-shot from Van Lente and artist Dan Parent is a collection of linked short comics that center around Archie trying to make enough money to buy a new guitar. To do that, Archie signs up for an app and what follows is a satire of the gig economy with multiple jokes about late stage capitalism, and yet, it still feels like an Archie comic we’ve seen before.

Van Lente and Parent’s comic is paired with an Archie story from 1997 by the late George Gladir and Stan Goldberg, Betty in High School 2021 A.D. The story went viral because of remote learning and other not entirely inaccurate predictions about this rather unusual year. I spoke with Van Lente recently about the comic, which is out next week.

‘Bite-Sized Archie’ arrives on TinyView, comiXology

Archie Comics’ fun web series gets a syndication deal and a digital collection.

Bite Sized Archie, the fun webcomic that appears on Archie Comics’ website and social media channels, can now be found on TinyView and soon on comiXology as well.

The strip is the brainchild of two Archie employees — Ron Cacace, director of publicity & social media for Archie, and Vincent Lovallo, who serves as art director. They’ve done more than 20 strips featuring Archie characters, including the traditional Archie gang as well as some of their horror line characters, like Vampironica.

“We created Bite Sized Archie because we were looking for a new way to deliver funny and relevant comics content directly to our dedicated fans on social media,” said writer and Archie Comics Director of Publicity & Social Media Ron Cacace. “We’re continually amazed and humbled by the positive feedback from readers of all ages. And getting to add the series to a platform like Tinyview, where a whole new audience will be able to follow along weekly alongside our current readers on social media, it’s such a wonderful feeling and we’re so grateful for the opportunity.”

David Gallaher will script Rob Liefeld’s ‘The Shield’ one-shot for Archie Comics

The announcement comes after Liefeld left the project over a variant cover reveal by a different artist.

Archie Comics has announced that they’ve hired David Gallaher (Only Living Girl, High Moon) to script Rob Liefeld’s The Mighty Crusaders: The Shield one-shot.

The one-shot will still arrive on June 30 as planned. Archie positioned Gallaher as scripting “a new story for The Shield one-shot based on Mr. Liefeld’s artwork.”

Karl Kerschl has been creating his award-winning webcomic The Abominable Charles Christopher on and off for more than a decade now, and this past week the lovable woodland creatures that inhabit his website were joined by a new visitor — Tanager, a new science fiction webcomic from Kerschl.

The description is fairly simple: A young woman with a strange gift travels the galaxy to help lost souls find their way home, but the execution is everything. In this first installment, she’s helping out an old man searching for something he lost on an alien-infested mining asteroid.

Rob Liefeld quits the upcoming ‘Mighty Crusaders’ revival at Archie

Archie still plans to release the first issue in June as originally planned, but with a new writer providing the script.

Comics creator Rob Liefeld has left the Mighty Crusaders revival project, which was announced last December. He left because he said a key plot point was revealed on a variant cover created by Tone Rodriguez for Camelot Books and Comics.

“When the key plot point/element is revealed on a retail variant cover – it’s probably time to exit the stage on this one…. like seriously?” Liefeld wrote on Facebook earlier this month. He said he found out about the cover when Rodriguez tagged him in a Facebook post about it.

He later added in another post: “So, earlier this week I posted to one of my groups how I’m trying to keep all the contents of one of my upcoming projects under wraps. I want the reveals and the twists to be fresh and happen organically. I love the story and art and was trying to protect it as best I can. And I had succeeded in doing so. The cover with the big twist being publicly shared as I’m walking out the door to a farewell party for friends was like the big gut punch. All the wind goes out of the sails and the enthusiasm with it. It’s this practice … that needs better management. Everyone is trying to one up the other guy because the shelf life on these comics is so small. Publishers need to do better.

Archie followed up today by announcing that The Mighty Crusaders: The Shield #1 will still be released on June 30, as previously announced, using the artwork that Liefeld already turned in. They said that a new writer would be brought in to script Liefeld’s pages.
