Jeff Lemire conjures ‘Minor Arcana’ at BOOM! Studios

The new series will be written, drawn and colored by Lemire, and it launches in September.

Jeff Lemire has revealed his new project with BOOM! Studios that was teased back in April — Minor Arcana, an ongoing series that he will write, illustrate and color.

The series is about the daughter of a small-town “psychic” who returns to town to take care of her ailing mother — only to discover that unlike mom, she may have actual psychic powers.

“If Black Hammer was my love letter to the superhero comics I grew up reading then Minor Arcana is my love letter to the classic Vertigo comics of my teenaged years, but all filtered through my own style,” Lemire said in his newsletter. “I really want to get back to doing a true ongoing series that focuses on the importance of single issues again.”

Stephanie Phillips + Goran Sudzuka team for the crime thriller ‘Red Before Black’

The new series from BOOM! Studios begins in August.

Stephanie Phillips and Goran Sudzuka are headed down south to Florida — where you can beat the heat if you beat the charges too — for a new series from BOOM! Studios. Red Before Black “is a violent, hyper kinetic, women-led Florida crime thriller”that begins in August.

“For me, Florida is like that relative that you make fun of but become defensive about the minute you hear someone else making fun of them. I grew up there…I’ve been chased by water moccasins, had to call someone about alligator removals, thrown more than one hurricane party, and dressed like a pirate for the annual invasion of Tampa’s bay,” Phillips said. “There is truly no better place I could think of to set Red Before Black–a weird crime story with an even weirder setting. Val and Leo might be our main characters, but Florida is ever present and Goran truly draws the s*** outta this curious place that will forever feel like home for me, no matter where I live.”

BOOM! welcomes the darkness in a new horror anthology this summer

‘Hello Darkness’ will include stories about everything from ‘primal fears to modern political horror’ by Garth Ennis, Becky Cloonan, R.L. Stine, Francesco Francavilla, James Tynion IV, Werther Dell’Edera and more.

Back in their very early days, BOOM! Studios released a couple of horror anthologies titled Zombie Tales and Cthulhu Tales, which ran for 12 issues each and featured stories by the likes of Mark Waid, Keith Giffen, Steve Niles, William Messner-Loebs, Joe R. Lansdale, Fabio Moon and many more. Now BOOM! is getting back into the horror anthology business with Hello Darkness, which kicks off this summer.

The title will feature “the darkest stories yet,” promising to cover everything from “primal fears to modern political horrors.” The first six issues will include a new Something Is Killing The Children story by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera.

“My whole careers started writing comic shorts, so it’s very exciting to bring it all around full circle and tell a SIKTC story in that format. The story Werther and I are going to be telling here is one that’s been in the back of my mind for almost five years, and I’m thrilled we finally have the perfect platform to bring that story to readers,” Tynion said.

BOOM!’s ‘Power Rangers’ titles will end in July

Melissa Flores and Simona Di Gianfelice will bring the current storyline to an end in the ‘Darkest Hour’ one-shot.

BOOM! Studios has announced the end of the current iteration of their Mighty Morphin Power Rangers titles, which will reach their conclusion in July with the one-shot Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Darkest Hour. That will follow Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #122, the final issue of the main series, which has been published for eight years.

Writer Melissa Flores will team with artist Simona Di Gianfelice and colorist Raúl Angulo on the one-shot.

“After nearly two years, the Darkest Hour comes to a close,” Flores said. “This event has been one of the biggest tasks of my career, but I’ve enjoyed every single, heart-wrenching minute. Although I put our poor Rangers through the ringer, I hope the ending is as satisfying for the reader as it was for me to write it!”

The first meeting of ‘The Graveyard Club’ convenes in September

R.L. Stine and Carola Borelli bring fresh YA scares this fall.

Welcome to Graves End, a town with a curious trait — it’s surrounded by graveyards. That’s the perfect meeting place for The Graveyard Club, a new project coming from horror master R.L. Stine, artist Carola Borelli and BOOM! Studios.

“In The Graveyard Club graphic novels, the teens hang out in the graveyard–because it might be the safest place in town,” Stine said. “Their town is surrounded by graveyards. And swarms of red-eyed bats come swooping out every night. And that’s just the BEGINNING of the horror! I’m having a lot of fun with this series!”

Jeff Lemire + BOOM! tease something new for this fall

“… as both a comics fan and a creator, I have been craving longer format stories again.”

BOOM! Studios has announced that Jeff Lemire, creator of Sweet Tooth, Essex County, Fishflies, The Nobody and many other comics and graphic novels, will launch a new ongoing series at the publisher this fall.

Lemire will both write and draw the new title. No title or artwork was shared, beyond the “Eye of Providence” sketch shown above.

“For a while now I have felt like the ‘ongoing series’ in comics is a dying breed,” Lemire said. “I’m guilty of this myself, having put out a lot of shorter projects over the last several years. But as both a comics fan and a creator, I have been craving longer format stories again. Series like the classic Vertigo monthlies that would drive me to the comic shops every week when I was younger.”

Black Widow: Venomous will not only show the super-spy figuring out how to work with her new partner, but will also set the stage for the upcoming Venom War event.

“Who doesn’t want to write Natasha Romanoff? And with a badass symbiote, it didn’t take much to convince me,” Schultz said. “Luciano Vecchio’s art is so amazing. It’s been so fun to delve into Nat’s spy craft techniques, and you just may learn something new about her.”

Greg Pak + Diego Galindo bring ‘Lawful’ to BOOM! Studios

The new series explores the difference between what’s right and what’s the law.

Imagine if the rules Pinocchio lived by applied to a whole city, but instead of their noses growing when they lied, they slowly transformed into monsters. That’s the premise behind Lawful, a new series coming from BOOM! Studios this summer.

Greg Pak of Incredible Hercules and Mech Cadet Yu fame and Diego Galindo, artist of Stranger Things: The Voyage, team up for a new series about a city where breaking the law comes with an interesting price.

Lawful may be simultaneously one of the most personal and fantastical stories I’ve ever written, and I’m so grateful to be working with this brilliant team to bring it to life,” Pak said. “If you’re a fan of gorgeous, lush, organic art that takes you somewhere you’ve never been and tales of young heroes struggling to do the right thing in a world of impossible mandates, this book is for you.”

The series will debut from BOOM! Studios in June.

Veteran comics writer Peter Milligan, known for the delightful X-Cellent, the gritty Dogs of London and the enigmatic Engima, among countless other titles, returns this summer with Profane.

The new series, drawn by Detective Comics and Justice League Dark Raül Fernandez, is described as a “mind-bending murder mystery” by publisher BOOM! Studios.

“I’m excited by Profane, exploring as it does the twisty, noir atmosphere that I like, and with the weirdness and existential angst I like even more.  A story like this needs the right artist and Raül Fernandez is not only a great artist but a truly perfect match,” Milligan said.

BOOM! Studios announced the one-shot at the ComicsPRO meeting last week. Aaron will work with Reeves and artist Francesco Manna on the project, which will take the immortal title character to  the 1800s American West. It also serves as the first of several BRZRKR: Bloodlines specials BOOM! will release.

“Having new writers and artists explore B.’s history in these Bloodlines Specials is something that is so exciting to me,” said Reeves, the creator of BRZRKR. “Jason and Francesco teaming up for a brutal, tragic Western was a perfect match for BRZRKR and the types of stories we want to tell in this universe.”
