Ethan Sacks teams with his daughter to write Syzygy’s ‘Haunted Girl’

Ethan and Naomi Sacks will work with artist Marco Lorenzana on the paranormal thriller.

Syzygy, the comics imprint started by Chris Ryall and Ashley Wood back in 2021, have announced Haunted Girl, a four-issue miniseries written by Ethan and Naomi Sacks and drawn by Incredible Hulk artist Marco Lorenzana.

Described as a paranormal thriller, the inspirational story will also detail a teenage girl’s struggles with anxiety and depression, which is something Ethan and his daughter Naomi also experienced.

“Four years ago, while my daughter was hospitalized, I came up with the idea of a story about a girl who’s battling depression and finds out she’s the sole hope to save the world,” said Ethan Sacks.“That she would find a way to endure and to save everyone she loves. It was meant to be uplifting and cathartic. Now four years later, my daughter is in a place where she could help write that story. To inspire others going through similar struggles. As a father, I’m proud.  As a comic book writer, I’m inspired. As a human being, I’m moved.”

‘Star Wars: Dark Droids’ kicks off in August

The crossover event introduces a droid virus that corrupts their programming and spreads like wildfire across the galaxy.

Both the Empire and the Rebel Alliance will face dire consequences when their droids break bad during an event that will run through Marvel’s Star Wars titles starting in August.

Announced during the Star Wars Celebration event earlier this month, Star Wars: Dark Droids will introduce something called the Scourge that will spread through the galaxy. It’ll infect everything from Lobot to a squad of Clone War-Era Prototype Battle Droids, bringing a sense of dread and horror to the Star Wars line.

The event kicks off in Star Wars: Dark Droids #1, which comes out Aug. 3 from writer Charles Soule and artist Luke Ross, before spreading through the other Star Wars titles. Here’s the rundown …

A new ‘Midnight Suns’ title rises at Marvel

Blade, Magik, Nico Minoru and more come together in September.

Marvel has announced that a 1990s team — with a slight name change and a different roster — will return in September. Midnight Suns by writer Ethan Sacks and artist Luigi Zagaria almost shares a name with the classic Ghost Rider-led team Midnight Sons, but does share its name with the upcoming Midnight Suns video game that Marvel and 2K will release later this year.

The new team will feature several classic and new mystical heroes, including Magik, Blade, Kushala the Spirit Rider, Nico Minoru and Zoe Laveau from Strange Academy. Oh, and my favorite mystical Marvel character, Wolverine. (It used to be that Wolverine would pretty much pop up in every Marvel comic at some point, so it’s kind of funny and appropriate to see him here).

‘Heroes Reborn’ in June spotlights Nighthawk, Power Princess, ‘Night-Gwen’ and ‘Murder Hornet’

Marvel’s event miniseries continues in June with more issues and one-shots about a world where the Avengers never assembled.

Marvel has revealed more details about their Heroes Reborn plans for June, including what to expect in the miniseries as well as from several one-shots.

You might remember that Heroes Reborn is an event miniseries coming from Marvel that spins out of Jason Aaron’s work on Avengers. It’ll run for seven issues, with several tie-in one-shots to support it. Jason Aaron is writing the main series, with different artist doing each issue. The first four issues will be drawn by Ed McGuinness, Dale Keown, Federico Vicentini and James Stokoe.

And the story, essentially, falls into the “continuity has been screwed up and now someone needs to fix it” genre, kind of like House of M and Age of Apocalypse. In this new reality, the Avengers never assembled, and the void they left was filled by the Squadron Supreme. Blade is the only Avenger who seems to remember how things should be.

June will bring issues #5-7 of the miniseries, which, like the first four, will have connecting covers:

As calls to “defund the police” spread in protests, on the news and in social media, Ezra Claytan Daniels imagines a few “departments that will replace police in the not-too-distant future.”

Posted at The Nib, Daniels’ new concepts include the “Los Angeles Department of Food Security,” pictured at the top of this post, and the “Department of Crime Deduction,” pictured above, which he calls a “diversely skilled roster of detectives who excel in creative thinking and problem solving.” Probably recruited heavily from crime podcasts.

‘Weapon Plus’ explores Wolverine, Captain America’s shared history

Marvel announces ‘Old Man Hawkeye’

Ethan Sacks and Marco Checchetto revisit the world of “Old Man Logan” with a prequel story about Wolverine’s road trip buddy.

The New York Daily News reports that one of their own, Ethan Sacks, is writing a 12-issue Old Man Hawkeye series for Marvel. This prequel to the Old Man Logan series will be drawn by Marco Checchetto.

“In this story, [Hawkeye is] losing his vision and that sort of forces him to confront something really horrible that happened to him personally 45 years ago, and go on his own hero’s journey while he still can,” Sacks told the Daily News. “It’s very much like a ticking clock that’s forcing him into action.”
