Kirkman + De Felici sing an ‘Oblivion Song’ in March

New Skybound title transfers Philadelphia to an alternate dimension.

Skybound has announced the next project from The Walking Dead and Invincible scribe Robert Kirkman — Oblivion Song, co-created with artist Lorenzo De Felici. Joining the duo on the project are colorist Annalisa Leoni, letterer Rus Wooton and editor Sean Mackiewicz.

Here’s how Skybound describes the project: “A decade ago 300,000 citizens of Philadelphia were suddenly lost in Oblivion. The government made every attempt to recover them but after many years they gave up. Nathan Cole… won’t. He makes daily trips, risking his life to try and rescue those lost, alone and afraid, living in the apocalyptic hellscape of Oblivion. But maybe… Nathan is looking for something else? Why can’t he resist the siren call of the Oblivion Song?”

Lemire, Sorrentino reteam on creator-owned ‘Gideon Falls’

The ‘Green Arrow” and ‘Old Man Logan’ team is joined by colorist Dave Stewart for ‘a suspenseful ongoing supernatural/horror series’ at Image Comics.

Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino breathed new life into Green Arrow and Old Man Logan at DC and MArvel, and now they’ve teamed up on a creator-owned series, Gideon Falls, at Image Comics. Dave Stewart will color the new ongoing supernatural/horror series.

“Gideon Falls has been percolating in my brain for a long long time. A lot of the ideas have been with me for over a decade, but I just never found the right time or way to pull them together…that was until I started working with Andrea Sorrentino,” Lemire said. “Andrea and I quickly developed an incredible chemistry while working on Green Arrow and Old Man Logan. And, as much as we loved working on those books, we were dying to create something all our own too, and now we have with Gideon Falls, one of the weirdest and wildest things either of us has ever done. We are excited to be at Image and excited to be unleashing Gideon Falls with the incomparable Dave Stewart joining us on colors.”

‘Monstress’ scares up a British Fantasy Award

Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda’s fantasy comic takes home another award this year, beating out fellow nominees ‘Saga,’ ‘2000AD’ and more.

Monstress took home another award this weekend, winning a British Fantasy Award for “Best Comic/Graphic Novel.”

Written by Marjorie Liu, drawn by Sana Takeda and published by Image Comics, Monstress took home a Hugo Award earlier this year. Other nominees in the category included Saga, 2000AD, Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat!, Sixpack and Dogwelder: Hard Travelin’ Heroz, and the webcomic Skal.

The nominees for the British Fantasy Awards were decided by members of The British Fantasy Society, with additional nominees added by the award’s jury to ensure “egregious omissions” made the list. Winners were announced at FantasyCon 2017.

A knight who never sleeps stars in historical romance drama ‘Sleepless’

Sarah Vaughn and Leila del Duca team for new title from Image Comics this December.

Earlier this year Image Comics announced Sleepless, by artist Leila del Duca, writer Sarah Vaughn, editor Alissa Sallah and letterer Deron Bennett. It’s not about your last trip to Comic-Con; it’s actually an historical romance drama about a knight who never sleeps.

“Sleepless is a story that is very dear to me, grown from an idea I would play in my head at night as I tried to fall asleep,” said Vaughn. “It’s wonderful to see the book come to life with Leila, Alissa and Deron. I hope readers enjoy reading about Poppy and Cyrenic and getting a little more romance, costumes and fantasy in their lives.”

Kittredge, Ingranata help Top Cow unsheathe the ‘Witchblade’

One of Top Cow’s signature titles returns in December.

Top Cow has announced that they’ve recruited writer Caitlin Kittredge, artist Roberta Ingranata and colorist Bryan Valenza to create a new Witchblade series, featuring the sword-wielding character created by Marc Silvestri, Brian Haberlin, Michael Turner and David Wohl. The new series starts in December.

“Everywhere you look in the real world, you’ll see a hero. Not the kind that wears a cape and flies around a comic page or across the big screen but the kind you see walking around being kind of unremarkable. Basically people. People that, when given the choice, will simply do the right thing. Because that’s what a hero does,” said Silvestri. “Doing the right thing isn’t always easy, as it often means being selfless. Without hesitation. But again, that’s what a hero does. Our most enduring superheroes come from this simple idea: people choosing to do the right thing. People like the wielders of the Witchblade.”

Walker, Brown and Greene harvest a ‘Bitter Root’ next year

New title from Image Comics will showcase a family during the Harlem Renaissance protecting the world from supernatural forces.

David Walker, Chuck Brown and Sanford Greene will team up on a new comic set during the Harlem Renaissance, Bitter Root, next year from Image Comics. The new series was announced today at the Rose City Comic Con in Portland, Oregon.

“Bitter Root is going to be unlike any comic book people have seen,” said Walker. “We’re mixing action and horror, with a cast of characters unique to the medium to tell an epic tale of the Sangerye family and the sacrifices they are willing to make for humanity. I’m excited for this series for several reasons. It gives me the chance to work with Sanford again, Chuck, who is a great co-writer, and Image, which publishes some absolutely amazing comics.”

Not only is it “Kirby Week” here on Smash Pages, but the entire comic industry has come together to honor and remember one of the industry’s greatest and most influential creators, Jack Kirby, for what would have been his 100th birthday. Here’s a round-up of links related to “The King.”

The first place to check is Marvel.com, which has an entire section dedicated to Jack Kirby. It’s ‘Evolution,’ Baby: Four writers team up for Skybound’s new horror title

James Asmus, Joseph Keatinge, Christopher Sebela and Joshua Williamson team with artists Joe Infurnari and Jordan Boyd on a story about evolution gone wrong.

Skybound is bringing together six creators — James Asmus, Joseph Keatinge, Christopher Sebela, and Joshua Williamson with artists Joe Infurnari and Jordan Boyd — for their new title, Evolution. Taking place all over the world as humanity starts to rapidly evolve, the series follows three characters who notice the transformation and attempt to fight it.

“For a story as expansive and world-changing as Evolution, we knew we couldn’t tell the story in a normal way so this book includes a murderer’s row of not just one writer, but four writers working together to tell one cohesive story,” said editor Jon Moisan. “This writing team has to be one of the best creative teams ever assembled. Telling the story of a doctor in Philadelphia desperately trying to warn the world, Christopher Sebela has written a frantic race against time. In Rome, James Asmus and Joshua Williamson show us the internal struggle of a nun questioning her faith in the face of the new species. And finally, in Los Angeles, Joseph Keatinge has built a heartrending story of what happens when old relationships are torn to shreds by forces beyond all control. Craig & Cypress file with ‘The Gravediggers Union’

New Image Comics series will feature “steroid zombies, monster gods, swamp vampires, ghost storms and space monkeys.”

Deadly Class artist Wes Craig and Rodd Racer creator Tobey Cypress are teaming up for a 10-issue horror series, The Gravediggers Union, a new comic “chock-full of steroid zombies, monster gods, swamp vampires, ghost storms and space monkeys.” They’ll be joined by colorist Niko Guardia (The Last Contract, Hit 1957) and letterer/designer Jared Fletcher (Paper Girls).

“With The Gravediggers Union, I tried to create an environmental horror story that mixes EC Comics, H.P. Lovecraft’s horror and a lot of dark humor,” Craig said in a press release. “I’m so proud of what we’re creating, and what Toby, Niko and Jared are doing together is some of the most original looking comics I’ve ever seen.”

‘Monstress’ takes home a Hugo Award

In the “Graphic Story” category, Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda’s fantasy series beats out ‘Black Panther,’ ‘Saga,’ ‘The Vision’ and more to win the award.

Monstress, the fantasy series written by Marjorie Liu, drawn by Sana Takeda and published by Image Comics, has won the 2017 Hugo Award in the “Graphic Story” category.

Presented annually since 1955, The Hugo Awards recognize the best science fiction in books, comics, movies, TV and more. The Hugo Awards are voted on annually by members of the World Science Fiction Convention. The Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story has been awarded annually since 2009, with previous winners including Saga, Ms. Marvel and Girl Genius. The Sandman: Overture won last year.

Other nominees in the category this year included Saga, Paper Girls, Black Panther, Ms. Marvel and The Vision. Takeda was also nominated for best professional artist, a category won by Julie Dillon.

Alternative rockers Me Like Bees creating soundtrack for Image’s ‘The Realm’

Each issue of the apocalyptic fantasy series by Seth Peck and Jeremy Haun will coincide with a new single by the band.

When The Realm by writer Seth Peck and artist Jeremy Haun kicks off next month, the series will be accompanied by its own soundtrack, courtesy of the band Me Like Bees.

“Musicians are such natural storytellers,” Haun told Alternative Press. “I’ve always had an obsession with concept albums. You’d have Bowie or Nick Cave or Johnny Cash telling these stories across an album. They were brilliant. Always sparked my imagination. I was as inspired by that as any movie, book or comic story.”

Each issue will coincide with the release of a new single from Me Like Bees, eventually resulting in a new EP from the band. The first single, “The River Divides” is already out and serves as a theme song for the entire series. Check out the video below:

Top Cow announces high-concept ‘Port of Earth’ from Kaplan and Mutti

New series sees aliens arrive on Earth — with a business proposition.

During Comic-Con International, Top Cow announced a “gritty new science fiction series” by Eclipse writer Zack Kaplan and Rebels artist Andrea Mutti called Port of Earth.

“After exploring the solar apocalypse in Eclipse—which was just announced to be in development for TV, but more on that later—I’m thrilled to be tackling a very unique alien arrival story with another amazing creative team,” Kaplan said in a press release.
