Kyle Higgins, Alec Siegel + Rod Reis return to the world of ‘C.O.W.L.’

‘C.O.W.L.: 1964′ will launch in August and will tie into Higgins’ larger Massive-verse line of titles.

Kyle Higgins, Alec Siegel and Rod Reis will reunite 10 years later for C.O.W.L.: 1964, a three-issue miniseries that begins later this summer.

C.O.W.L., which has officially joined the Massive-verse titles overseen by Higgins, first launched in 2014. Set in the 1960s, the comic centers on the Chicago Organized Workers League, the world’s first super-hero labor union, which battled super villains, organized crime and eventually their own faltering public image. The previous series has been collected into two volumes.

“Returning to C.O.W.L. is very special for me,” said Higgins. “The series’ origins date back to my college thesis film, The League, and before that to the short story I wrote that got me into film school. It’s something that’s been with both Alec and myself for a long time. When Alec, Rod and I started this book In 2014, the idea of building it to be a part of a something larger wasn’t something that we thought we would ever be able to do. Now, as we come back to finish the core story, we’ll also be setting the stage for the future of C.O.W.L. and in some ways, The Massive-Verse.”

John Arcudi + Savannah Finley bring ‘Convert’ to Image Comics

The miniseries kicks off in August.

Veteran comics writer John Arcudi will return this summer with a new miniseries drawn by Savannah Finley. Convert is a science fiction story about a science officer who is stranded on an alien planet, where he’s haunted by his dead crew.

The writer of B.P.R.D., Major Bummer and more said the new series is a “more intimate” approach to science fiction for him.

“Convert was maybe my first opportunity to write a science fiction story the way I wanted to, meaning something more personal, more intimate—while at the the same time more fantastic—than what I’m used to seeing in the genre,” Arcudi said. “My hope is that this human element in the comic will connect with readers.”

Maria Llovet’s ‘All the Things We Didn’t Do Last Night’ arrives in July

The story originally appeared in the Image 30th Anniversary Anthology.

Image Comics will collect Maria Llovet’s three-part story from the Image 30th Anniversary Anthology into a one-shot. All the Things We Didn’t Do Last Night, which is about two criminals turned lovers, will arrive in July.

“This one-shot was initially created as an ‘origin story’ of a bigger project of mine, so in this edition I’ve decided to include a lot of extra material and info where the readers will know more about these characters that I love and their future adventures,” the Barcelona-based creator said. Llovet’s previous comics include Crave, Luna and Porcelain.

‘Creepshow’ returns for a third miniseries from Skybound

James Stokoe, Chip Zdarsky and Kagan McLeod will contribute to the first issue.

Creepshow, the iconic horror movie that Skybound has turned into two comic book miniseries, will return with a third one in September.

Like they did with the previous volumes, Skybound has assembled a stellar team of creators for the anthology, including John Ridley, Mike Carey, Jorge Fornés, John Arcudi, Ed Brisson, Stefano Raffaele, Chris Condon and more. Chip Zdarsky, Kagan McLeod and James Stokoe will contribute to the first issue, which will feature two stories.

McFarlane Productions has been on a roll introducing Spawn into various genres, and this summer they’ll return to the world of humor and satire with Spawn Kills Every Spawn. Like the previous Spawn Kills Everyone and Spawn Kills Everyone Too, this comic features the tiniest Spawn, Spawny, deciding to kill another set of comic characters — the Spawn universe.

Written by John Layman and illustrated by Rob “Sketchcraft” Duenas and colorist Robert Nugent, the five-issue miniseries sees Spawny arrive at a Spawn convention filled with Spawns from around the multiverse, all of whom are more popular than him. So he decides to become the most popular by eliminating the competition.

Kurt Busiek, Fabian Nicieza + Stephen Mooney bring ‘Free Agents’ to Image Comics

The new “superhero series with a twist” debuts in July.

Two veteran superhero writers will return to the genre with a fun concept. Kurt Busiek and Fabian Nicieza — who, between them, have written X-Men, Justice League, Avengers, Superman, X-Force, Astro City, New Warriors and countless other superheroes — are teaming up with artist Stephen Mooney, colorist Triona Tree Farrell and letterer Tyler Smith for Free Agents.

“It’s a superhero series with a twist,” Busiek said. “The Agents were done. They were retired, and had started building new lives, going to college, making themselves a place here on Earth. And then it all starts coming back.”

Marguerite Bennett + Giuseppe Cafaro reimagine ‘Witchblade’ this summer

Top Cow relaunches the 1990s character with a new origin.

Witchblade, arguably the most well-known creation from Top Cow’s early days, will return this summer in a new series by writer Marguerite Bennett and artist Giuseppe Cafaro.

Along with Witchblade co-creator Marc Silvestri, the duo will reimagine the character’s origin, with “contemporary takes on familiar characters.” Witchblade first debuted in 1995 and was created by Silvestri, editor David Wohl, writers Brian Haberlin and Christina Z, and artist Michael Turner. This new series has Sara Pezzini back as the wielder of the Witchblade gauntlet, after a 2017 series cast journalist Alex Underwood as the Witchblade.

“The ability to tell a story full of monsters, sexuality, vision, and history was irresistible,” said Bennett. “Our saga is sleek, vicious, ferocious, and has a lot to say about power in the 21st century and will be the first time that we are stopping the roller coaster to let more people on. I’ve loved Witchblade since I was a child, and there is truly no other heroine like Sara with such an iconic legacy and such a rich, brutal relationship to her own body.”

Quick Hits | Rest in peace, Jeffrey Veregge

Jeffrey Veregge, the award-winning Native American artist and writer whose work appeared in Marvel’s Voices: Indigenous Voices, on comics covers and at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, has passed away at the age of 50. Zack Davisson shared the news on social media late last week, while Jeffrey’s wife Christina confirmed it and said he died of a heart attack after a long battle with lupus.

“For 1025 days he fought lupus like the superhero we knew him to be,” her post reads. “The strength, faith, determination and courage he showed while being in the hospital for a total of 925 days was an inspiration to us all. He fought so hard for his family and his 3 children who were his absolute pride and joy. He will be missed more than words can express. This world was a better place because of him.”

Marvel has revealed the cover and more details on the highly anticipated new X-Men title by Jed MacKay and Ryan Stegman, which is part of the bigger X-Men: From the Ashes line that follows the end of the current Krakoa era.

The new title will feature Cyclops leading a team that handle “explosive mutant-specific issues without restrain,” with the first threat being “an existential new enemy that rises out of the remains of Orchis.”

Both MacKay and Stegman are happy to be here.

“Taking on the X-Men is always a daunting prospect, but I’m extremely psyched to take this team of mutants back into the world with Ryan,” MacKay said.

‘Misery’ doesn’t love company in this new Spawn Universe title

The new title by Todd McFarlane and Szymon Kudrański featuring a classic Spawn character kicks off in May.

The expansion of the Spawn universe continues in Misery, a four-issue miniseries about Cyan Fitzgerald, the daughter of Spawn’s wife, Wanda, who passed away in 2016. Cyan, now 17, has a “healing” power that forces her to distance herself from those she loves.

McFarlane will write the series, which will be drawn by Szymon Kudrański, artist of Blood Commandment. It’s part of the much bigger Spawn Universe that McFarlane is building out this year.

“Having two daughters myself, I watch them both grow older, see them flourish and struggle, as they become young women,” said McFarlane. “To also try and imagine that they’ve lost their biggest supporter, their mom—it would have been so very impactful on their lives. This was the inspiration for the idea of this book: What if, at the most crucial time in a young person’s life, instead of embracing all that life has to offer, they instead had to shield themselves from society. What would that do to their maturing personalities? That’s what this book will explore while also bringing in a dark element of horror that will haunt the Cyan character.”

Time travel + Dick Wolf: Posehn, Trohman + Johnson team up for ‘Rifters’ from Image Comics

The new series begins in June.

Comic writer and comedian Brian Posehn and Fall Out Boy guitarist Joe Trohman are co-writing a new series coming from Image Comics this summer. They’re joined by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles artist Chris Johnson for the “time-traveling comedy romp” that’s described as a cross between Time Cop and Law & Order.

“Joe and I are having a blast with Rifters. We put time travel and police procedurals in a comedy blender, we had underwear on our head and we yelled ‘Dick Wolf‘ three times,” said Posehn.

‘Destro’ and ‘Scarlett’ land in the Energon Universe in June

Kelly Thompson, Marco Fereari, Dan Watters and Andrei Bressan continue to re-introduce the G.I. Joe and Cobra teams at Skybound.

Skybound’s Energon Universe will continue to grow in June with two more miniseries focused on characters from G.I. Joe — Scarlett by Kelly Thompson and Marco Ferrari, and Destro by Dan Watters and Andrei Bressan.

The two miniseries follow the recent series starring Cobra Commander and Duke, which brought characters from G.I. Joe into the larger shared universe that also includes Transformers and Void Rivals.

“Duke and Cobra Commander were two of the highest-selling G.I. Joe comics of all time, and they’re only the start of our new beginning for the amazing G.I. Joe franchise,” said Skybound’s Sean Mackiewicz. “With G.I. Joe and Cobra now locked on an unavoidable collision course, Scarlett and Destro will introduce new characters and factions that will disrupt their most carefully laid plans. Kelly Thompson, Marco Ferrari, Dan Watters and my favorite madman, Andrei Bressan are crafting action-packed, jaw-dropping comics that will forever change the Energon Universe.”
