Lara Croft makes a surprise appearance in ‘G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero’ this week before headlining a five-issue crossover

Skybound surprises readers with the first meeting of G.I. Joe and the Tomb Raider icon, with a full miniseries launching in October.

Skybound pulled another Wednesday surprise today, hiding an appearance by video game bad ass Lara Croft inside G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #330. They also announced that a five-issue crossover miniseries, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero/Tomb Raider, will follow in October from writer Kyle Higgins and artist Elena Casagrande.

The miniseries sends Lara Croft to Cobra Island in search of a hidden treasure called the Arbco Star, teaming her with Shipwreck and several other Joes as they race Destro and the Baroness for the prize. Higgins and Casagrande will be joined by colorist Alex Guimarães and letterer Pat Brosseau on the crossover.

“Tomb Raider meets G.I. Joe. Lost artifact, a Destro plot and a joint infiltration mission to Cobra Island– the appeal of a story like this should be obvious,” Higgins said. “Having never had the opportunity to work with either, I was quite excited when Alex Antone called to ask me if I’d like to build an adventure for both. We’re taking some really fun swings with both brands–and there are definitely some deep cuts for G.I. Joe fans!”

‘Radiant Black’ debuts as Image Comics’ first-ever audiobook

Massive-Verse architect Kyle Higgins writes, directs and narrates the production, with ‘Boy Meets World’ co-stars Rider Strong and Will Friedle heading the cast.

Kyle Higgins’ Massive-verse keeps finding ways to become more massive, and now they’ve expanded off the comic page and into your ear with an audiobook adaptation.

Radiant Black: The Audiobook, Volume One is now available on Spotify, LibroFM, Everand and other platforms. This marks the first audiobook adaptation of not just the Massive-verse titles, but also an Image Comics title.

The production, from Black Market Narrative, is written, directed and narrated by Radiant Black co-creator Kyle Higgins, with Rider Strong and Will Friedle from the sitcom Boy Meets World voicing leads Nathan Burnett and Marshall Ward. Friedle previously voiced Marshall Ward in the secret animated short that was hidden behind a QR code in Radiant Black #15. The audiobook features cinematic sound design by Higgins and an original score by Sam Ewing, who worked on the music for The Walking Dead.

“When Eric Stephenson and Lorelei Bunjes first pitched me the idea of doing Radiant Black in audio, I knew that to do it right would be a huge undertaking,” Higgins said. “This project has been a true labor of love for our team. From assembling our amazing cast to recording, design, narration, score, and our final mix, this has been an incredible experience at every turn. I never thought I would be back in the world of audio, but to be able to work in one of my favorite mediums and take advantage of all the possibilities it affords has been more than worth it.”

DC’s Next Level goes next level in September with ‘Legion of Super-Heroes,’ ‘Teen Titans’ and ‘The Doom Patrol’

Who’s your favorite super team?

DC’s September solicitations are making the dream work with not one, not two but THREE new team titles. Teen titles? Yeah, that too, as both Legion of Super-Heroes and Teen Titans return to the publishing slate.

The launches follow all the other recent Next Level titles, including Batwoman, Lobo, Deathstroke: The Terminator, Firestorm, Zatanna, Barbara Gordon: Breakout and The Deadman, with a couple more — The Demon and Jonah Hex — waiting in the wings.

“These books are set in continuity,” said DC co-architect Josh Williamson, who is also writing the Legion title. “While the series will be independent reads and not heavily tied to other books, they will exist alongside DC’s ongoing comic book series like Superman, Batman, Justice League Unlimited and more.”

Not sure we needed that clarification, but ok … well, maybe we did? Several of DC’s September titles seem to have a new moniker in front of them, ie All In Batman, All In Batgirl, etc. Maybe they’re trying to avoid confusion with the red-hot Absolute Universe.

So let’s take a look at each new title, all of which come out Sept. 2 …

Snake Plissken returns in new comic ‘Escape From New York: Escape From Chicago’

Kyle Higgins and Val Rodrigues return to the world of John Carpenter’s 1981 cult classic, sending the iconic antihero on a new adventure this September.

Mad Cave Studios has picked up the license to make comics based on John Carpenter’s 1981 film Escape from New York, a cult classic that saw Kurt Russell rescue the president when he crash-lands inside the prison that used to be New York.

The comic will head west, though, as Kyle Higgins and Val Rodrigues bring us Escape From New York: Escape From Chicago this September.

“Escape From New York is one of the films that taught me what genre storytelling could be—lean, mean, and built on a world you can’t stop thinking about,” Higgins said. “Getting to write in Carpenter’s Manhattan is the kind of thing my younger self wouldn’t have believed. I can’t wait for everyone to see Snake’s next adventure.”

DC unveils new Absolute Universe series, ‘Teen Titans’ and Gotham event ‘Bad Seeds’ at ComicsPro

The publisher also revealed release dates for more of its Vertigo titles and two new DC Next Level titles arriving this summer

DC Comics used its ComicsPro presentation Thursday in Glendale, Calif. to unveil a packed slate of new titles and events coming in the second half of 2026, including two new Absolute Universe series, a major Gotham City crossover event and the next wave of its DC Next Level initiative.

So much stuff here I’m gonna use subheads … so you know it’s serious.

DC’s August solicitations bring a new Superman project by the team behind Image’s ‘Ice Cream Man,’ an ending for H2sh, a milestone issue of ‘Detective Comics’ and more.

The Justice League family of titles will continue to grow in August with Justice League Red by Saladin Ahmed and Clayton Henry.

(I guess the number of Justice League titles you can have is truly Unlimited, isn’t it? Bwahaha …)

The new title will feature a team run by Red Tornado that’s “so covert, the founders can’t know it exists.” It’ll include Power Girl, Huntress, Deadman, Green Lantern Simon Baz and Cyborg.

Kyle Higgins, Alec Siegel + Rod Reis return to the world of ‘C.O.W.L.’

‘C.O.W.L.: 1964′ will launch in August and will tie into Higgins’ larger Massive-verse line of titles.

Kyle Higgins, Alec Siegel and Rod Reis will reunite 10 years later for C.O.W.L.: 1964, a three-issue miniseries that begins later this summer.

C.O.W.L., which has officially joined the Massive-verse titles overseen by Higgins, first launched in 2014. Set in the 1960s, the comic centers on the Chicago Organized Workers League, the world’s first super-hero labor union, which battled super villains, organized crime and eventually their own faltering public image. The previous series has been collected into two volumes.

“Returning to C.O.W.L. is very special for me,” said Higgins. “The series’ origins date back to my college thesis film, The League, and before that to the short story I wrote that got me into film school. It’s something that’s been with both Alec and myself for a long time. When Alec, Rod and I started this book In 2014, the idea of building it to be a part of a something larger wasn’t something that we thought we would ever be able to do. Now, as we come back to finish the core story, we’ll also be setting the stage for the future of C.O.W.L. and in some ways, The Massive-Verse.”

Marvel’s solicitations for August landed late last week, right before the long weekend here in the U.S. (which I made even longer!) so let’s catch up on all the new stuff they plan to release in the last month of the summer. Just like I did with DC, I’ll hit the titles I haven’t previously covered. Image announces ‘Moon Man’ by Kid Cudi, Kyle Higgins + Marco Locati

The ongoing series debuts in January.

Rapper Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi will team with Massive-verse architect Kyle Higgins and artist Marco Locati for Moon Man, a new ongoing series about a celebrity astronaut who returns to Earth with a big secret.

They’re joined by colorist Igor Monti and letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou on the project. Mescudi plans to release a mixtape to accompany the extra-length first issue.

“This might be one of the top three coolest things I’ve ever been a part of. This story is something that took a lot of love from everyone involved, and I’m so excited for the world to finally experience Moon Man,” said Mescudi. “I promise you this comic will be unlike anything you’ve read before. To each and every person that picks up a copy and shows support in January—I love you more than you can imagine. Thank you!”

Higgins, Clark + more will play some ‘Deep Cuts’ in April

The new anthology series looks back at the history of jazz.

Kyle Higgins has been slowly but surely building up a new superhero universe — the Massive-verse — over the last few years, but his next project at Image Comics is a departure from that. Higgins will team with Radiant Black co-writer Joe Clark for Deep Cuts, an anthology series inspired by the history of jazz music.

Higgins and Clark will jam with several artists on the series, including Danilo Beyruth, Helena Masellis, Diego Greco, Ramón K Pérez, Juni Ba and Toby Cypress, with all issues colored by Igor Monti, who they’ve worked with on Radiant Black, Inferno Girl Red and Supermassive. The covers will all connect, spanning 60 iconic years of music history and featuring artwork by Chris Brunner and Rico Renzi.

Marvel has announced a third Ultraman miniseries by Kyle Higgins, Mat Groom and Davide Tinto. Subtitled ‘The Mystery of Ultraseven,” the story will include “an enigmatic new Ultra and a secret that has remained hidden for decades.”

Saladin Ahmed posted the first pages of TerrorWar this week, the comic he first announced when he launched the paid version of his Substack newsletter. Drawn by Dave Acosta and Jay Leisten, the comic is about a city where people’s worst fears have come to life somehow, and the terrorfighters who face them with really big guns.
