Sunday Comics | Legendary Lynx, lie detectors, horses and elbows

Check out recent webcomics by Alex Segura, Sandy Jarrell, Lisa Hanawalt, James Kochalka and more.

Here’s a round up of some of the best comics we’ve seen online recently. If we missed something, let us know in the comments below.

Readers of Alex Segura’s novel Secret Identity — a murder mystery set in the 1970s comics industry — have probably been wondering, “Hey, do you think maybe they’ll do a real The Legendary Lynx comic?” Well, wonder no more, because Segura has launched a Lynx comic via Zestworld.

The Lynx, of course, is the faux comic made up by Segura for the novel — which actually includes pages from it as part of the story. While the credits stick to the in-story names for the creators, the comic is actually being written by Segura, with Sandy Jarrell providing the art, Grey Allison on colors and Jack Morelli doing letters, all under the watchful eye of editor Allison M. O’Toole.

Check out news and updates from Marvel, Dark Horse, Top Shelf, Image Comics and more.

Mail Call is a roundup of cool things we’ve received in our mailboxes recently from comics publishers, creators and more. Hit the links for more information.

James Tynion IV was one of the first creators out of the gate with his plans for his premium Substack newsletter subscription, announcing a new comic called Blue Book with artist Michael Avon Oeming that he planned to share with paid subscribers.

But even if you aren’t a paid subscriber, you can still check out the first one, which he posted for free a couple days ago.

Blue Book is a passion project for myself and Michael Avon Oeming,” Tynion wrote. “We share a lifelong fascination with UFOs and a lifelong frustration with how those stories have been adapted into other media. There is a strangeness in the original accounts of UFO sightings that usually gets swept aside, but Michael and I want to lean into the strangeness. These are human stories of ordinary people who brush against the unknown and must grapple with what they see there. There is a deeper truth, whether you believe in the accounts or not, that lies in the many ways people tell these stories.”

Two laureates team up for ‘The Exquisite Triumph of Wormboy’

James Kochalka and poet Sydney Lea bring you the adventures of a worm with a human face.

The first Cartoonist Laureate of Vermont has teamed up with a former Vermont Poet Laureate for a new book called The Exquisite Triumph of Wormboy.

James Kochalka drew the new book, while poet Sydney Lea added verse to describe the adventures of the tiny invertebrate hero.

“I drew a wordless 50 page story about a worm with a human face, which was versified as an ekphrastic epic by Vermont Poet Laureate Sydney Lea,” said Kochalka on Tumblr. “And it really is an incredible piece of work, unlike any graphic novel you’ll find anywhere.”

Kochalka’s ‘Monkey vs Robot’ celebrates its 20th anniversary

A collection with new material will arrive from Top Shelf in June.

It was 20 years ago that James Kochalka showed the world what would happen when the monkey faced off with its natural enemy, the robot. To celebrate the anniversary of that confrontation, Top Shelf Comix will collect Kochalka’s original story, its sequel and an all-new chapter into one giant softcover.

Monkey vs Robot: The Complete Epic will arrive in June, with a new, final chapter that brings this long-running feud to its natural conclusion: Monkey Vs. Robot in Love. They’ve also added color to the entire saga — just like the original Star Wars trilogy.

Support free speech with these ‘retro’ CBLDF designs

Get shirts, hats, phone cases and more featuring artwork by Frank Miller, Jeff Smith, Mike Allred, James Kochalka, Jim Lee and many others.

Over the years comic creators have donated artwork to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund for use on membership cards, T-shirts and other premiums. Many of them quickly sold out and haven’t been available for a while — until now. CBLDF has launched a Threadless shop, offering shirts and other items featuring some of their “retro” artwork.

For instance, you can get a shirt featuring Mike Allred’s Lady Liberty drawing, which graced the cover of a CBLDF anthology in 2014. There’s also Frank Miller’s Defiant Fist, which would look great on a throw pillow. Or this patriotic Bone artwork, if you’re looking for something for the kids. Additional artwork by Cliff Chiang, Terry Moore, Jim Lee, Judd Winick and more can also be found on the site.

Proceeds benefit the fund, so head on over to Threadless to check them out.
