Professor X goes on the run in ‘X-Manhunt’

The crossover event will take place in March’s X-Men titles.

Marvel has announced X-Manhunt, a crossover that will run through most of the X-Men related titles in March.

The story will revolve around Professor X’s escape from Graymalkin Prison, where he’s been since the “From the Ashes” line-wide reboot earlier this year. His escape and subsequent plea for help will cause strife amongst the many different groups of mutants, and the story will play out in issues of Uncanny X-Men, X-Men, NYX and more, before wrapping up in X-Manhunt Omega #1 at the end of March.

“We’ve mostly been keeping the various groups of X-characters separated from one another as we set up the post-Krakoa landscape,” Executive Editor Tom Brevoort said. “But it feels like now is the right time to send them crashing into one another. And who better to instigate this situation than the disgraced Professor X, who has intimate connections with almost all of our key players?”

Check out the covers and issue descriptions below for the eight-part crossover, which also reveal the return of at least two mutants to the X-titles — Mister Sinister and Maggott.

Godzilla returns to the Marvel universe next year in a series of one-shots

‘Marvel vs. Godzilla’ sees the kaiju facing off with the Fantastic Four, Avengers and more for the first time in decades.

Following a series of reprints of the 1970s series and a line of variant covers, Marvel and Toho International have announced Godzilla vs. Marvel, a series of one-shots arriving next year.

Each issue will feature the king of monsters and other kaiju facing off with the Avengers, X-Men and, right out of the gate, the Fantastic Four. Godzilla vs. Fantastic Four #1 by current FF writer Ryan North and artist John Romita Jr. will pit the Fantastic Four against Galactus and his newest herald, King Ghidorah. Godzilla and the Silver Surfer will team up to try and save the world.

“We approached them initially for our reprints, but a while after those conversations, it was clear that both of our teams were excited to do more together,” Marvel Editor in Chief C.B. Cebulski told The Hollywood Reporter. “These crossovers started coming together over that time, in direct collaboration with Toho, and we felt the perfect time for them was for Godzilla’s 70th anniversary next year. We’ve been thrilled to work with them on these, and we hope this will be a sign for more exciting projects to come.”

After losing his job, Doctor Strange looks for a new opportunity … in Asgard

Derek Landy and Carlos Magno will end Doctor Strange’s forced retirement and send him to an unexpected location next March.

If you’ve been wondering what Doctor Strange’s “future endeavors” might include, wonder no more — the former sorcerer supreme of Earth is headed to Asgard to see if they have any openings. Hopefully Thor can give him a good recommendation.

The series starts in March as part of the bigger One World Under Doom storyline, and its by writer Derek Landy and artist Carlos Magno.

“It’s been a daunting prospect, taking the reins of Doctor Strange and leading him into a new era,” Landy said. “To follow on from the last few years of stories, which have seen huge creative leaps from astonishing creative teams, would have been a terrifying prospect were it not for Editor Alanna Smith’s primary instruction: move him to Asgard.”

Doctor Doom recruits South Korea’s Tiger Division to enforce his new world order

Yoon Ha Lee + Minkyu Jung bring the South Korean heroes into the One World Under Doom event.

Doctor Doom’s influence as the new sorcerer supreme will take an international flavor in Doom’s Division, a five-issue miniseries featuring the South Korean team Tiger Division. It ties in to the bigger One World Under Doom crossover event that kicks off in February.

Writer Yoon Ha Lee and artist Minkyu Jung will give the heroes a new mandate in the series, which comes at an interesting time in South Korea’s history. In other news, I hear Doom might be named Time’s “Man of the Year.”

“South Korea has a painful history, but we always overcome them, and this time, Marvel’s South Korean super hero team is facing tough times,” Jung said. “I can’t wait to see how they are going to show that spirit during One World Under Doom and I’m grateful to be a part of this event.”

Spider-Gwen heads into space for a ‘dark and very personal’ story next year

Stephanie Phillips and Paolo Villanelli send Ghost Spider and Loki to the stars in March.

Stephanie Phillips brought Spider-Gwen to the 616 Earth under mysterious circumstances earlier this year, and now she and Paolo Villanelli will send the Ghost-Spider off-world in a new story arc that also features Loki.

The intergalactic storyline kicks off in Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider #11, which comes out in March.

“I envisioned a Gwen and Loki storyline from the beginning of my work on Gwen, so this arc feels like the culmination of everything we’ve been building toward,” Phillips said. “Taking Gwen to space has allowed us to explore some unexpected elements of her character, especially as her optimism and hope clashes with King Loki’s nihilism. Paolo and I have worked hard to make this a unique sci-fi adventure—one that’s dark and very personal to Gwen.”

The Thing takes on everybody in a miniseries next year

When a hit goes out Aunt Petunia’s favorite nephew, a cadre of classic villains head to Yancy Street to collect.

With the new Fantastic Four film arriving next year, Marvel is focusing heavily on their first family in the comics as well — which includes a new miniseries starring The Thing by Tony Fleecs and Leonard Kirk.

The solo miniseries finds Ben Grimm back on Yancy Street, where his attempts to stop a criminal conspiracy put him in the crosshairs of a mysterious villain who puts a contract out on him — drawing the attention of everyone from Bullseye to the Juggernaut.

“What I love about Ben Grimm is that he’s just a regular hardworking guy—who happens to have super powers,” said Fleecs, co-creator of Image’s Local Man. “He’s Jack Kirby. He’s not easily impressed by all of the outlandish, cosmic stuff constantly going on around him.”

Slugfest | Here Comes the DOOM! in Marvel’s February solicitations

Doom’s new order faces resistance from ‘Weapon X-Men,’ Deadpool and Miles Morales clash, and more.

Slugfest is a roundup of cool announcements about projects coming to a shelf near you. This edition focuses on Marvel’s February solicitations. Hit the links for more information.

Marvel’s One World Under Doom will kick into high gear in February, as the world’s savior in this past summer’s Blood Hunt event puts his new powers to use as the sorcerer supreme. Marvel announced the event back in October, which will be anchored by a miniseries by Ryan North and R.B. Silva. Originally that miniseries was going to be called The Rise of Emperor Doom, but it looks like Marvel elected to keep things simple and have changed the name of the series to match the event — One World Under Doom. That’s a good choice, although now it doesn’t have a reference to the classic David Michelinie/Bob Hall Marvel Graphic Novel Emperor Doom.

One World Under Doom is a story I’ve been working on since 2023,” North shared. “This huge head start is such a gift when telling a story like this: I can make sure it all hangs together properly, and for other artists working on tie-ins with their books, I can share completed scripts instead of just an idea of what happens.”

Marvel is finally publishing their ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ adaptation

Delayed since the early days of the COVID pandemic, the five-issue series by Jody Houser and Will Sliney will feature scenes that weren’t in the film.

Marvel’s long-delayed adaptation of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will finally see print almost five years after the film originally debuted.

The miniseries by Jody Houser and Will Sliney was originally intended for release in June of 2020, a year marked by the COVID pandemic and related shutdowns. It was a tragic and tumultuous year for everyone, and the comic industry was no exception. The Rise of Skywalker was one of several comics Marvel delayed or cancelled when Diamond went into shutdown mode as a result of COVID, and I never expected for it to see the light of day.

But now that Marvel is shifting their Star Wars timeline from the post-Empire Strikes Back period to a post Return of the Jedi period, set before the most recent trilogy, maybe it felt like a good time to dust this one off. It’ll also have scenes that weren’t in the film’s final release.

“There’s a resurgence of interest in these characters, especially Kylo Ren, Darth Vader’s blood heir,” Editor Mark Paniccia said. “Jody’s script captures the impact of these iconic moments between the film’s heroes and villains, while the art by Will Sliney and dazzling colors by Guru-eFX give a visually unique experience of this epic finale.”

Two Thunderbolts teams face off in ‘Thunderbolts: Doomstrike’

The ‘One World Under Doom’ tie-in series starts in February.

If you read the most recent Thunderbolts series you know that Bucky Barnes and company inadvertently did Doctor Doom a solid. That doesn’t sit well with Bucky, so he’s pulling the band back together — along with some new members — to face off with Doom and his own team of Thunderbolts.

The five-issue series is written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, with art by Tommaso Bianchi. In addition to characters like the Winter Soldier, Black Widow and Red Guardian, it’ll also feature the return of many of the original Thunderbolts, including Songbird, Moonstone, Atlas and Fixer.

“We can’t wait for folks to see what Ryan (North) and company have planned for One World Under Doom – a Marvel event with brains, heart and incredible scope,” Kelly and Lanzing said. “The Thunderbolts are a crucial part of the puzzle: this is the story of what happens when heroes openly oppose Doom… and how they’ll have to learn to fight differently if they’re ever to make a difference.”

Thunderbolt Ross faces off with Doom in Benjamin Percy + Geoff Shaw’s ‘Red Hulk’

The One World Under Doom tie-in series begins in February.

The Sabretooth War team of Benjamin Percy and Geoff Shaw are moving to a new front, as they put the Red Hulk under the thumb of the new sorcerer supreme Doctor Doom … and as you can imagine, that doesn’t really work for Thunderbolt Ross.

Red Hulk #1 arrives in February, right around the time the character will make an appearance in the fourth Captain America movie. It’ll tie into Marvel’s bigger publishing initiative, One World Under Doom.

“When I learned about the One World Under Doom event, my mind immediately went to Thunderbolt Ross,” Percy said. “A global takeover would not be tolerated by a man who bleeds red, white and blue (but especially red). And his experience—as a soldier in the field, as a military strategist in the war room, as a walking weapon of mass destruction—would make him someone Doom would target well before he made his move.”

So Ross is Doom’s pick for his secretary of defense — I can think of worse choices. At least he’s qualified, right?

“I proposed a story in which Ross would be kidnapped by Doom and forced into a ‘Think Tank’ prison in which he would test out various war-time scenarios,” Percy said. “That’s where we begin: in a book that does not give you a second to breathe. It moves and moves and moves with constant action and tension.”

Chip Kidd + Michael Cho team for a graphic novel featuring the original Avengers

Abrams will release the high-end hardcover next year.

Writer and designer Chip Kidd will team with artist Michael Cho for The Avengers in the Veracity Trap, a graphic novel coming next year from Abrams Books’ MarvelArts line. The 64-page hardcover will retail for $25.99.

Abrams published the award-winning Fantastic Four: Full Circle by Alex Ross, as well as the expanded edition that was recently released and features a lot of extras.

“Writing this book was really just an excuse to see Michael Cho depict glorious, epic, jaw-dropping sequential storytelling with these iconic characters that we love so much. He more than delivered,” Kidd said. “Oh, and it was also my ultimate comics ego trip, which Abrams and Marvel actually allowed me to take. I still don’t know why but I am beyond grateful.”
