Captain Valor returns in ‘World of Betty & Veronica Jumbo Comics Digest’ #23

Check out an exclusive preview of two new stories coming in next week’s digest from Archie Comics.

Courtesy of our friends at Archie Comics, we’re happy to present a preview of this time for World of Betty & Veronica Jumbo Comics Digest #23, which comes out March 11.

One of the fun things about posting these previews from Archie Comics’ upcoming digests is seeing what past superheroes they “unearth.” And this week’s preview features not only an unearthed hero from the 1940s, but also some literal unearthing at a dig site. Captain Valor, who first appeared back in the 1940s in Zip Comics, returns in a new Little Betty & Veronica story by Tom DeFalco, Bill Galvan and Ben Galvan.

This issue also sees the return of Captain Commando in a high-seas adventure that features Cheryl Blossom, who is jealous that Veronica’s yacht is better than hers, hiring a group of pirates to sink it. Y’know, as one does. This one is written by Ian Flynn with art by Steven and Lily Butler, and both stories featuring colorist Glenn Whitmore and letterer Jack Morelli.

Below you’ll find previews of both stories, plus a complete classic Archie tale featuring Betty, Veronica and Ethel, who gives off some big artistic energy in the story.

Captain Commando and The Fox come to the rescue in ‘World of Archie Jumbo Comics Digest’ #127

Check out an exclusive preview of two new stories coming in next week’s digest from Archie Comics.

We’re happy to once again present a preview courtesy of our friends at Archie Comics — this time for World of Archie Jumbo Comics Digest #127, which comes out Feb. 15.

Today’s exclusive includes previews of two new stories, both written by Ian Flynn, drawn by Steven Butler, colored by Glenn Whitmore and lettered by Jack Morelli. The first, “Commando & Conquer,” features an appearance by Captain Commando, a hero I had to look up. He first appeared during World War II and lead The Boy Soldiers, a group of kids who fought the Nazi regime behind enemy lines. In this new story, which is inked by Lily Butler, Archie signs his friends up for a boot camp to get them in shape for the summer, but it happens to be run by the good captain, who attempts to turn them into the next generation of Boy Buddies.

The second story, “Snap(shot) Decision,” Jughead and his photojournalist instructor Paul Patton are ambushed by the Pain Conductor, who wants revenge on Patton for an unflattering expose on him. But Patton is actually the superhero The Fox, and he springs into action against this train-themed villain. This one is inked by Jim Amash.

Below you’ll find previews of both stories, plus a complete classic Archie story where he day dreams about being super hero — which is kind of funny, given that these days Archie has been everything from a superhero to a zombie to a warrior of the apocalypse. It’s by the late George Gladir, Pat Kennedy and Terry Austin.

Little Betty & Veronica team with the Boy Buddies in ‘Betty & Veronica Jumbo Comics Digest’ #311

Check out an exclusive preview of two new stories coming in next week’s digest from Archie Comics.

Courtesy of Archie Comics, we’re pleased to present a preview of Betty & Veronica Jumbo Comics Digest #311, which comes out Feb. 8.

Today we have previews of two new stories that will appear in the digest, starting with “Operation: Brainbust” by Tom DeFalco, Bill Galvan and Ben Galvan. It features a team-up between Little Betty and Veronica and the superhero sidekick team known as the Boy Buddies. Roy the Super-Boy and Dusty the Amazing Boy Detective are showing the two girls around the campus of the Montgomery Military Academy when they notice someone up to no good.

The second story, “Ransomware Beware,” is by Francis Bonnet and Rex Lindsey. In this one, Lodge Industries has to deal with a ransomware attack, and the girls bring in Detective Fu Chang to help Mr. Lodge with his dilemma.

Below you’ll find previews of both stories, plus a complete classic Betty & Veronica story featuring a snowstorm (which hits home today considering I’m currently surrounded by a frozen wasteland in Texas). Enjoy!

Fu Chang returns in ‘Archie Jumbo Comics Digest’ #337

Check out an exclusive preview of two new stories coming in next week’s digest from Archie Comics.

Today, courtesy of Archie Comics, we’re pleased to present a preview of Archie Jumbo Comics Digest #337, which comes out Feb. 2.

The digest will contain two new stories, the first by Francis Bonnet, Rex Lindsey and Glenn Whitmore. It features the return of Fu Chang, the Golden Age detective from the 1940s who solved crime in San Francisco. He’s also the inspiration for Jake Chang, the new Archie character introduced earlier this year who will star in his own show on The CW.

The second story features Little Archie and the Boy Buddies, aka Roy and Dusty, AKA the sidekicks of the Wizard and the Shield. They’re investigating Grimloch Island, which is rumored to be haunted, but really a friend of Little Archie lives there and could do without the company. I like how people refer to Little Archie as “Little Archie” instead of just “Archie,” like the “Little” isn’t implied. This one is by Tom DeFalco, Bill Galvan and Ben Galvan, with Whitmore once again on colors and Jack Morelli on letters.

Below you’ll find previews of both stories, plus a complete classic Little Archie story by Dexter Taylor featuring dinosaurs. Enjoy!

Mr. Justice and Steel Sterling make return appearances in ‘World of Betty & Veronica Jumbo Comics Digest’ #126

Check out an exclusive preview of two new stories coming in next week’s digest.

Courtesy of our friends at Archie Comics, we’re pleased to kick off the new year with a preview of World of Betty & Veronica Jumbo Comics Digest #126.

This digest has three new stories in it in addition to a bunch of classic stories, and today we have previews from two of those stories. The first sees the return of Mr. Justice for what could be his biggest challenge ever — serving as a life coach for Cheryl Blossom. This is a guy who used to regularly fight Satan, but Cheryl may be more than he can handle. That one is by Ian Flynn, James Fry and Bob Smith.

The second preview features Steel Sterling battling the Blue Bison, a battle that would probably go more smoothly if Betty and Veronica weren’t competing to get an autograph from our hero to give to Archie. It’s by Tom DeFalco, the Brothers Kennedy and Jim Amash, while Glenn Whitmore and Jack Morelli provide coloring and lettering for both stories.

Check out the preview below, as well as a classic story featuring Betty battling technology.

Ghosts, goblins and gardening: Norman Shurtliff’s ‘Skull Cat’ starts his job at ‘The Curious Castle’ next month

The new Top Shelf graphic novel kicks off a middle grade series by the creator.

Ghosts, vampires, goblins … they’re all in a day’s work for Skull Cat, the new garden-keeper at Le Dark Chateau, the local spooky castle.

Skull Cat and the Curious Castle is the first in a planned series by Norman Shurtliff and arrives in stores on Feb. 21. The thing I find interesting about it, besides the supernatural elements, is the fact that Skull Cat is a gardener — which makes sense given Shurtliff has a degree in horticulture. So come for the cute cat being chased by monsters, stay for the (hopefully plentiful) gardening tips.

Our preview today is for the second of two new stories appearing in the digest — “Justice Isn’t Blind” by Ian Flynn, Steven Butler and Rich Koslowski, which features the return of Mr. Justice. His first appearance was in Blue Ribbon Comics #9 in a story by writer Joe Blair and artist Sam Cooper.

Check out the preview below, as well as a classic crime story featuring Archie.
