Lemire + Crook break the fourth wall in ‘The Unbelievable Unteens’

The Black Hammer miniseries will debut in August.

Jeff Lemire and Tyler Crook will reunite for another comic set in the Black Hammer universe, which Lemire co-created with artist Dean Ormston. The Unbelievable Unteens is described as a “meta team superhero saga” that will introduce a new superhero team.

“The Unbelievable Unteens is a Black Hammer story that I have been working on for a few years and was just waiting for the right time and the right collaborator,” said Lemire. “After doing Colonel Weird with Tyler Crook I knew he would be perfect to bring the creepy and wonderful teenage super hero world of the Unteensto life. This series stands alone but will also tie back into the new Black Hammer: Reborn series in unexpected ways!” 

Black Hammer: Reborn will debut in June and will feature Lucy Weber, the new Black Hammer.

Years in the making, ‘Echolands’ will debut from Image in August

J.H. Williams III, Haden Blackman, Dave Stewart and Todd Klein tell the story of a thief in a bizarre future world.

The all-star team of J.H. Williams III, Haden Blackman, Dave Stewart and Todd Klein have been working on their latest comic Echolands for years — the comic was first announced back in 2018 at the Image Expo. And now Image has announced that the first issue will finally arrive in August.

“I’m beyond excited we’re finally bringing Echolands to everyone, and incredibly stoked to be reunited with longtime creative partners Haden, Dave and Todd, for what is a vast challenging world building project unlike any other we’ve attempted before,” said Williams III. “It’s a lifelong dream years in development, featuring an amazing cast of characters that we believe you’ll love as much as we do. And we’re so proud to be under the welcoming Image Comics banner, the premiere publisher for innovative entertaining stories.”

Mammone + Bertolini offer ‘Second Chances’ in August

The new Image Comics series offers second chances to the desperate in August.

Image Comics has announced a new “action-packed noir” series by Ricky Mammone and Max Bertolini. Second Chances is about a hotline you can call that offers just that — a second chance through a new identity.

“Second Chances is a bizarre noir about how we can let mistakes define us,” said Mammone. “I think nowadays we forget that it’s very human to mess things up. With this series, we want to ask the questions what’s worth forgiving and most importantly, can we give ourselves a second chance?”

Russell + Tiesma + Popov bring ‘Deadbox’ to life in August

The new horror title will take readers to Lost Turkey, where a cursed DVD machine holds the town in its grip.

Vault Comics has announced a new horror series from the team of writer Mark Russell, artist Benjamin Tiesma, colorist Vladimir Popov and designer Tim Daniel. Deadbox is about a town caught in the grip of “a cursed DVD machine.”

From the cover it looks like it’s a cursed Redbox, but for trademark reasons I’m sure they couldn’t say that. But somebody call The Last Blockbuster, because this could be good news for them.

“I wrote Deadbox as a horror story, not just about a cursed DVD rental machine, but also about the feeling of being trapped, boxed if you will, in a town that doesn’t get you and a place you will never feel at home in no matter how long you live there,” Russell said.

Kyle Higgins + Juanan Ramírez tapped for a new ‘Darkhawk’ miniseries

Teenager Connor Young will take up the mantle of Darkhawk in the new miniseries.

About 30 years after he first debuted in his own solo series, Darkhawk flies back this August with a new miniseries.

Kyle Higgins, who contributed to the Darkhawk: Heart of a Hawk 30th anniversary special, will write the series. He’s joined by artist Juanan Ramírez.

“My approach to the mantle and the book in general comes from the same place that some of my other recent superhero work comes from: building something new and contemporary, while staying respectful to what’s come before,” Higgins told IGN.

DC celebrates 80 years of Aquaman this summer

The ‘Aquaman 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular’ will feature stories from Dan Jurgens, Geoff Johns, Jeff Parker and more.

Aquaman debuted 80 years ago in More Fun Comics #73, and to celebrate, DC will publish the Aquaman 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular in August.

Like the 100-page specials they’ve done for Superman, Batman, Green :antern and other characters over the past few years, this will be an anthology by a variety of creators associated with the King of Atlantis as well as some new faces.

‘Immortal Hulk’ will wrap up with issue #50

Al Ewing and Joe Bennett prepare for the end in August’s ‘Immortal Hulk’ #49.

Al Ewing and Joe Bennett’s epic Hulk tale is starting to wind down.

According to Marvel.com, Immortal Hulk #50 will be the finale of the story they’ve been telling since 2018.

“It’s finally time to admit it—Immortal Hulk is reaching the end of the story we set out to tell,” Ewing said. “Issue #49 brings jade-jaws to the gates of the abyss and a final accounting of his life—in time for a last issue you’ll have to experience to believe.”

Ridley + Cabal take over ‘Black Panther’ this summer

Black Panther returns to Earth in August for an action-packed espionage story.

With Ta-Nehisi Coates’ long run on Black Panther coming to a close next week, Marvel has announced plans to relaunch the title with a new first issue by John Ridley and Juann Cabal.

Following the Panther’s adventures in space, Ridley and Cabal will offer a more grounded take on the character, one filled with action, espionage and love.

“It’s a hybrid espionage-Super Hero thriller, but at its core, it’s a love story,” Ridley told The New York Times. “And I don’t mean just romantic love, although there’s some of that as well. It’s love between friends.”

‘Runaways’ celebrates 100 issues in August

Rainbow Rowell, Kris Anka, Adrian Alphona and Andrés Genolet will contribute to the giant-sized milestone issue.

Through its many iterations, from its original run by Brian K. Vaughn and Adrian Alphona to the current one by Rainbow Rowell and Andrés Genolet, Runaways had made it to 100 issues, and Marvel plans to celebrate that milestone in August.

Issue #38 will be a giant-sized issue, as Rowell will work with three artists — Genolet, Alphona and Kris Anka. While they didn’t reveal any story details, Marvel did share the cover by Anka:

Kelly, Lanzing + Magno will provide the definitive origin of ‘Kang the Conquerer’

The Marvel villain takes the spotlight in a new miniseries that starts in August.

Marvel has announced plans to release a miniseries that’ll tell the “definitive origin story” of one of the Avengers’ greatest foes. Kang the Conquerer will launch in August by the writing team of Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, with art by Carlos Magno, Espen Grundetjern and Joe Caramagna.

“Time may mean nothing to Kang, but Kang means everything to us. This is the book we’ve been wanting to write for years,” Lanzing said. “It’s a total dream come true for Collin and I to be making our Marvel debut – we’re best friends who first met through a mutual love of Young Avengers, Runaways and Ultimate Spider-Man. But to make our first mark with a character as storied as Kang the Conqueror, on a very personal pitch we never in a million years thought would be greenlit, is a genuine honor. Carlos Magno is delivering jaw-dropping work that recalls the exacting detail and operatic emotion of Kang’s co-creator Jack Kirby. We’re genuinely stunned by every new page. Erik Larsen will launch a new ‘Ant’ series in August

Larsen will debut a new origin story for the character in the first issue.

Image Comics has announced that Erik Larsen will launch a new ongoing Ant series in August, sharing a new origin story for the character he bought from her creator, Mario Gully.

Back in March, Larsen announced he had obtained the rights to Ant. Previously Ant has been published by both Image and Arcana Comics. Larsen helped bring the series to Image and also helped out with the initial storyline, but it was never completed. It’s been 14 years since the last issue of Ant appeared, but Larsen will release Ant #12 in June, which brings the first volume to a close.

“I’ve been invested in Ant ever since Mario Gully initially pitched the book at Image back when I was the publisher,” said Larsen. “Mario and I threw a lot of ideas back and forth about how to make the character work at Image and the more I thought about the possibilities—the more I liked the character. I even plotted and laid out a final Ant chapter for Mario’s run on the book, which I ended up completing myself as the finale to her initial series.”

Marvel announces ‘Marvel’s Voices: Identity’ featuring Asian creators

Gene Yang, Greg Pak, Jason Loo, Marcus To and more will contribute stories to the anthology.

Marvel has announced the next one-shot in their Marvel’s Voices series, Marvel’s Voices: Identity, which will focus on Asian creators and characters.

“It’s unreal to me that one of Marvel’s first Asian super heroes, Jimmy Woo, was first introduced in in 1956. He predates the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, and the X-Men,” Editor Darren Shan told Marvel.com. “It just goes to show that Asians have been an integral part of Marvel’s history, both on the page and behind it. So I’m incredibly excited to celebrate that with all these amazing creators, new and established, featuring some of Marvel’s greatest (and dare I say it, best) super heroes!”
