The first volume of ‘The Hunger and the Dusk’ is $1.99 on Comixology today

Catch up on G. Willow Wilson and Chris Wildgoose’s epic fantasy before the second arc begins next month.

Last year award-winning writer G. Willow Wilson teamed up with artist Chris Wildgoose on The Hunger and the Dusk, a “high fantasy tour de force,” as the marketing billed it, and they weren’t lying. The series featured a dying world inhabited by humans and orcs who were once mortal enemies, but had to put their differences aside to face a powerfully brutal ancient race called the Vangol that threatened them both.

If that sounds intriguing, then this is your lucky week: not only has IDW released the first six issues — book one — as a trade paperback, but its available for the low price of $1.99 right now on Comixology.

And it comes at an opportune time, because next month will bring the the first issue of Book Two.

Victor Santos’ ‘Ginger’s Revenge’ is now available from Panel Syndicate

Pay what you’d like for a tale of teenage retribution.

It seems like new releases from Panel Syndicate, the digital comics imprint that first brought us The Private Eye, Barriers and Friday, have slowed down in recent months, so I was happy to get an email announcing a new title on their site — Ginger’s Revenge by Victor Santos.

Like all of Panel Syndicate’s release, Ginger’s Revenge is a “pay what you’d like” title, which you can then download as a PDF, CBR or CBZ file. It’s available both in English and Spanish.

And while many of the site’s titles are ongoing series, this is a complete story about one girl’s quest for retribution. It also includes a sketchbook section at the end, showcasing Santos’ process artwork.

Santos previously syndicated the story on Substack under the title Ginger Revenges, “a deliberate orthographic mistake” according to the creator, but he decided it was too strange and corrected the mistake.

Jordan Alsaqa + Ray Nadine will ‘Raise Hell!’ on Comixology next week

The coming of age horror story arrives digitally on Tuesday.

Jordan Alsaqa and Ray Nadine are bringing a little Hell to Comixology next week.

The writer of Terminal Protocol, Finding Peace and more has teamed with the GLAAD award-nominated cartoonist on Raise Hell!, a six-issue coming-of-age horror/comedy miniseries about three friends who decide to summon a demon one summer, which makes the upcoming school year hell — well, even more hellish than normal.

“Raise Hell! is a love letter to our own teen years,” said Alsaqa. “When Ray and I met, we bonded over our mutual love of Ska, horror and the anime of the mid-2000s. It’s a time period we’re nostalgic for, so many of our story ideas come from recalling our favorite childhood memories and injecting the supernatural and demonic into them.”

DSTLRY launches their digital marketplace

Digital comics bought from the company can now be sold to other collectors, with creators getting a stake of each sale.

When DSTLRY co-founders David Steinberger and Chip Mosher first announced the new publisher, there were three key points that seemed to set them apart from most other comics publishers — a different approach to ownership, where their “founding creators” would have a stake in the company; larger-sized editions that were more akin to the comics you find in France than you would normally see here in the U.S.; and a company-run digital marketplace, where you could buy and sell the digital editions of their comics.

It’s taken them a good year to bring that third point to life, but today DSTLRY launched their digital marketplace. If you’ve bought any of their digital comics in the past, which have only been available for a limited time, then you can now list them on the marketplace and sell them. The new owner receives access to the digital comic, along with the other benefits that DSTLRY offers, like early or exclusive sales of other digital comics, access to web streams (like they did recently with Becky Cloonan and Tula Lotay) and more. According to DSTLRY, creators will receive a royalty from each resale.

Clay McCormack + Ricardo López-Ortiz tag-team on the wrestling crime drama ‘Hard Style Juice!’

The five-issue digital series will debut from Comixology Originals on April 16.

Just in time for Wrestlemania, Comixology Originals has announced Hard Style Juice!, which brings together the worlds of family crime and pro wrestling.

Writer Clay McCormack, artist Ricardo López-Ortiz, colorist Heather Moore and letterer DC Hopkins have formed a stable and will bring the story of King Castro and his family to the arena. Or, in this case, to Amazon and their digital comics platform.

“Pro wrestling and comic books have always felt like two sides of the same coin for me, so combining the two was a no-brainer,” McCormack said. “Hard Style Juice! is a crime drama, but instead of organized crime the family is dedicated to the glitz and spectacle of professional wrestling.”

Austen + Olliffe re-team for ‘The Tormented’

The horror miniseries will launch on Comixology Originals next week.

Chuck Austen and Patrick Olliffe have reunited for another new series from Comixology Originals — The Tormented, a new five-issue digital comics series that will debut next week. They’re joined by colorist Lee Loughridge, letterer Jodi Wynne and editor Greg Lockard.

Austen, Olliffe and Loughridge previously worked together on Edgeworld, a science fiction series released by Comixology. This new series brings together horror and reality TV.

“Ryan Auster, our protagonist in The Tormented, sees ghosts, but kept it from his ghost-hunting family because he feared his family more than the ghosts, and because he’s been hiding it his whole life. Now in his 20s, he still hasn’t quite learned how to deal with the unexpected spirits, demons and otherworldly creatures that are constantly invading his life,” said Austen. “This series has been an absolute trip to create with Pat, and I hope readers have as much fun reading the story as we’ve had making it.”

Gary Phillips’ ‘Cold Hard Cash’ debuts on Comixology

The crime fiction writer brings his prose character Martha Chainey to comics.

Crime writer/novelist Gary Phillips is no stranger to comics, having written titles like Angeltown, High Rollers and The Rinse, among others. But today he brings one of his prose characters, Martha Chainey from High Hand and Shooter’s Point, to the comics page in the Comixology Originals title Cold Hard Cash.

Phillips has teamed up with artist Adriana Melo, colorist John Kalisz, letterer Tom Napolitano and editor Greg Lockard on the five-issue series, which had a surprise launch today on the digital comics platform.

“I’m thrilled to bring my tough as nails protagonist Martha Chainey to the pages of a comic,” Phillips said. “Seeing her navigate the gritty streets of L.A. and the high-end tech world in this fast-paced crime thriller illustrated by Adriana is surreal, and I hope people dig it.”

Dennis Hopeless draws from his real-life childhood for the crime comic ‘She’s Running on Fumes’

Tyler and Hilary Jenkins will illustrate the six-issue digital series.

All families have their crazy backstories, but few could fuel a crime comic. Writer Dennis Hopeless will tell a story based on his own life in She’s Running on Fumes, coming next month from Comixology Originals. He’s joined by artists Tyler Jenkins and Hilary Jenkins, letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou and editor Heather Antos.

“When I was 3 years old, my mother started a chop shop with a half-wit junkyarder named Corn Dog,” Hopeless said. “Dad was the criminal. Mom had never broken a law in her life, but with him brain-damaged, $50,000 of cocaine gone missing and hospital bills piling up, grand theft auto was our only hope.”

For today only, get DSTLRY’s ‘The Devil’s Cut’ on digital for $1

The new comic company launches their first limited digital comic.

DSTLRY, the comics company founded by former Comixology guys David Steinberger and Chip Mosher, has released their first digital comic — an online version of The Devil’s Cut, the anthology title that kicked off their line this past summer. And if you buy it today, it’s only $1, so head on over to their website before the price goes up at midnight.

Update: The price has now increased to $6.66.

You might recall from their initial announcement/unveiling of their company that DSTLRY plans to have “limited digital releases,” selling them directly through their website rather than through a service like Comixology. They plan to somehow make the digital releases “collectible and resellable” at the same time, through some sort of online marketplace. If this all sounds very NFT-ish, well, they say it’s not, but that marketplace apparently isn’t ready quite yet, as noted in their launch message on their site:

Remember, these pioneering single-issue releases won’t be available again digitally until our Marketplace launches in early 2024—and then only if owners decide to sell! Seize this unique opportunity to be part of DSTLRY’s evolving story from the outset. Our digital collections will be available when they launch with no immediate end-of-sale date.

Comixology + Stout Club announce three new projects at CCXP

Rafael Albuquerque, Eduardo Medeiros, Mateus Santolouco and Rafael Scavone will continue making comics for the digital platform next year.

Over the weekend at Brazil’s Comic Con Experience, or CCXP, Comixology and Stout Club Entertainment announced three new projects for 2024.

Stout Club is the studio that includes Rafael Albuquerque, Eduardo Medeiros, Mateus Santolouco and Rafael Scavone. They’ve already released several projects through Comixology Originals, including Red Tag, Hailstone and Funny Creek.

“CCXP is an epic pop culture convention that takes place in our home country of Brazil and Stout Club is so happy to be part of it,” Albuquerque said. “We are very proud of the comics we have released with Comixology Originals–Red Tag, Hailstone and Funny Creek–and are excited to showcase more of our talent and ideas with these new projects in 2024.”

Amazon will discontinue the Comixology app on Dec. 4

Users will need to switch to the Kindle app to read their comics after that date.

Amazon has announced plans to “retire” the Comixology app effective Dec. 4, according to a message in the app itself. Comixology users will have to start using the Kindle app to access their comics and graphic novels after that date.

The move is not a surprise, given everything that’s happened with Comixology and Amazon over the last two years — starting with the relaunch of the Comixology app that brought it more in line with the Kindle experience, as well as the elimination of a separate Comixology website for buying comics. Earlier this year the Comixology team was severely impacted by Amazon-wide layoffs, leaving the future of the digital comics service in question.

‘Parliament of Rooks’ takes flight from Comixology next week

‘Ask for Mercy’ artist Abigail Jill Harding writes and draws the five-issue gothic love story.

Comixology Originals is still alive and kicking, and have announced another new title for this month — Parliament of Rooks, a gothic love story written and drawn by Ask for Mercy artist Abigail Jill Harding.

“Parliament of Rooks is my homage to stories I grew up loving by fellow Brits like Neil Gaiman’s Sandman and Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights,” Harding told Daily Dead. “This is the first series I’ve written and drawn myself. It’s very ambitious, and I’m excited for people to read it.”
