‘Primordial’ by Lemire + Sorrentino launches in September

The award-winning team of Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino will be joined by Dave Stewart on a new science fiction series with roots in the Cold War space race.

The award-winning creative team of Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino will follow up Gideon Falls with Primordial, a six-issue miniseries that combines science fiction, the Cold War and test animals sent into space.

The series will kick off in September from Image Comics, nine months after the last issue of Gideon Falls arrived. Lemire and Sorrentino also collaborated on Old Man Logan and Green Arrow, and in fact will have a story in this week’s Green Arrow 80th anniversary special. Dave Stewart will color Primordial.

“Andrea and I were keen for our next collaboration after the success of Gideon Falls, but we also didn’t want to repeat ourselves,” Lemire told Space.com. “I think with Primordial we are trying something totally new and different for us. This book is part Cold War thriller and part deep space sci-fi, but all grounded in an alt-history take on the first animals sent to space. This book is full of mystery, adventure and intrigue and Andrea and I have both tried to push ourselves into new story telling territory.”

Lemire explores grief in ‘Mazebook’

The five-issue miniseries launches in September from Dark Horse

Sweet Tooth creator Jeff Lemire knows how to celebrate the day after Father’s Day, with the announcement of a heart-breaking tale called Mazebook about a father’s journey through grief over the death of his daughter.

Described as an “ambitious and haunting comic series about family, grief, and loss,” the five-issue mini-series will focus on a building inspector who becomes convinced his deceased daughter is trying to contact him. He uses an unfinished maze from her journal and a map of the city to make his way to a different reality and bring his daughter home.

Mail Call | ‘X-O Manowar’ returns, ‘Death Metal’ one-shots and more

A round-up of news from DC, Marvel, Image Comics, Valiant and more.

Mail Call is a roundup of the announcements we’ve received from comics publishers in our mailboxes recently. Hit the links for more information.

The Dark Nights: Death Metal event grew again this week, as DC announced two new anthology one-shots for November prior to releasing their full November solicitations.

The first one is focused on Lobo and is titled Dark Nights: Death Metal Infinite Hours Exxxtreme! #1. It will feature “Uncle Lobo” telling “familiar yet freaky stories of the DC Universe, exactly as he remembers them: with blood and guts and exxxtreme gratuitous violence.” The creators involved include Frank Tieri, Becky Cloonan, Dale Eaglesham and more, with a cover by Kyle Hotz.

If that one isn’t ridiculous-sounding enough, the second one, Dark Nights: Death Metal The Multiverse Who Laughs “offers the curious—and the brave—a glimpse into the nightmare realities that the Batman Who Laughs has created in tales by creators who know what it means to have a truly twisted sense of misfit humor.” As you can tell by the cover, one of those worlds features evil super pets. It includes stories by Amanda Conner, Patton Oswalt, Jimmy Palmiotti, Scott Snyder, Brandon Thomas, James Tynion IV, Joshua Williamson, Chad Hardin and more.

Jeff Lemire is working on The Question + The Joker for DC’s Black Label

Both projects are due out this fall.

Jeff Lemire is always busy making comics, and this fall he’ll tackle two different projects for DC Black Label featuring the Joker and the Question.

First, he’ll team with his Gideon Falls collaborator Andrea Sorrentino on The Joker: Killer Smile. Lemire told io9 the series will feature “a more grounded, real-world Joker.” He’ll also team with Denys Cowan, Bill Sienkiewicz and Chris Sotomayor on The Question: The Deaths of Vic Sage.

‘Legion of Super-Heroes’ returns from Bendis + Sook

A two-issue series starring DC’s myriad future characters will kick off the new series.

DC Comics’ teen heroes from the future have been in an extended break for a few years now, but that’s all about to change. DC has announced that the Legion of Super-Heroes will return to their own title by Brian Michael Bendis and Ryan Sook following a two-issue series titled Legion Of Super-Heroes: Millennium.

This two-issue prelude will feature art by Jim Lee, Ryan Sook, Nicola Scott and others.

It focuses on “a most unlikely tour guide to the 31st Century, a familiar face to DC fans who finds herself suddenly immortal. As she learns to cope with her newfound immortality and the reason she was chosen for this quest, her 1,000-year odyssey will connect all of DC’s future timelines for the very first time.” This is interesting, as it sounds like Bendis is cleaning up or at least connecting all of DC’s future characters and timelines in a similar fashion to what he’s doing with all their spy agencies in Leviathan.

Lemire, Sorrentino reteam on creator-owned ‘Gideon Falls’

The ‘Green Arrow” and ‘Old Man Logan’ team is joined by colorist Dave Stewart for ‘a suspenseful ongoing supernatural/horror series’ at Image Comics.

Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino breathed new life into Green Arrow and Old Man Logan at DC and MArvel, and now they’ve teamed up on a creator-owned series, Gideon Falls, at Image Comics. Dave Stewart will color the new ongoing supernatural/horror series.

Gideon Falls has been percolating in my brain for a long long time. A lot of the ideas have been with me for over a decade, but I just never found the right time or way to pull them together…that was until I started working with Andrea Sorrentino,” Lemire said. “Andrea and I quickly developed an incredible chemistry while working on Green Arrow and Old Man Logan. And, as much as we loved working on those books, we were dying to create something all our own too, and now we have with Gideon Falls, one of the weirdest and wildest things either of us has ever done. We are excited to be at Image and excited to be unleashing Gideon Falls with the incomparable Dave Stewart joining us on colors.”
