Smash Pages Q&A | Corinna Bechko on EC Comics’ ‘Blood Type’

The accomplished writer talks about writing the first-ever continuation of an EC Comics anthology short, which gets a preview this weekend on Free Comic Book Day.

The revival of EC Comics has been one of the most interesting and fun things to happen in comics this past year. Oni Press has done a tremendous job of paying tribute to the notorious publisher while also making it feel fresh and different.

Speaking of which, their revival will take another turn this summer as they debut Blood Type. Following the various anthologies Oni has released under the EC Comics banner this past year, Blood Type is the first-ever continuation of an EC Comics anthology short, “picking up the thread of how one lone vampire lost at sea will soon wash ashore on a tropical isle, where she is not the only creature with a taste for flesh and blood,” according to Oni Publisher Hunter Gorinson.

Ada, the lone vampire in question, made her debut in Epitaphs from the Abyss #3, in a story by Corinna Bechko and Jonathan Case. That story will appear in EC Comics Presents Blood Type #0, a Free Comic Book Day offering that’ll be available this Saturday. Bechko, in fact, has a store signing at Collector’s Paradise in Winnetka, California on May 3, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., signing alongside creators Rodney Barnes (Killadelphia) and Patrick Horvath (Free For All, Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees).

For the miniseries, Bechko is working with artist Andrea Sorrentino and colorist Dave Stewart to continue the story of Ada. It will kick off on June 18.

Bechko + Luckert will launch ‘The Space Between’ at BOOM! this fall

The story will follow the crew of a giant spaceship across multiple generations.

The Expanse writer and fossil preparator Corinna Bechko will team with Ghostlore artist Danny Luckert for a new miniseries titled The Space Between from BOOM! Studios.

Set on a spaceship called the Dodona, the series will span across generations as the starbound ark continues across the years to its destination, with each issue featuring new protagonists.

“I feel incredibly fortunate to be telling this story of romance and revolution with Danny,” said Bechko. “Life might be what happens while you’re making other plans, but what if those plans were made long before you were even born? I can’t wait for folks to enter The Space Between and find out!”

Now that they’re using multiple distributors, it makes sense that DC Comics would launch a new means for communicating distribution information vs. just limiting it to Diamond’s Previews. That seems to be DC Connect, a new, downloadable catalog they announced this week. It contains information on upcoming comics and graphic novels, with plans to expand it to include “talent interviews, preview pages from upcoming stories, behind-the-scenes looks at projects in development, multimedia content and more.”

DC enlists Corinna Bechko, Gabriel Hardman for ‘Green Lantern Earth One’

The ‘Invisible Republic’ team will chronicle the early adventures of Hal Jordan as part of DC’s graphic novel line.

DC Comics has recruited the all-star team of Corinna Bechko and Gabriel Hardman to bring Hal Jordan into their Earth One line of graphic novels. Green Lantern Earth One is scheduled to arrive in March 2018.

“Approaching this as an Earth One story gives us the opportunity to go back to the core concept of Green Lantern and interpret it through the lens of a modern, grounded sci-fi story while still being true to the Silver Age roots of Hal Jordan,” Hardman said in a press release. “Having storyboarded Interstellar, this is an approach I’m comfortable with and have wanted to explore in comics. Realistic sci-fi is only the beginning of this story; we have something much more epic in store.”

Joss Whedon’s ‘Angel’ returns for another ‘season’ at Dark Horse

Buffy’s ex returns next year in a new series by Corinna Bechko, Geraldo Borges and Michelle Madsen.

Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer spinoff Angel will return to comics in January for Angel Season 11, by writer Corinna Bechko and artists Geraldo Borges and Michelle Madsen.

Published by Dark Horse Comics and following this summer’s announcement that Buffy would also return for an 11th “season,” the new series “finds Angel being tormented by memories of his past,” the press release states. “His visions link his dark past to a Big Bad coming in the future. The goddess Illyria intervenes and assists Angel as he discovers that it might be possible to change the future by traveling back in time to change the past.”

Smash Pages Q&A | Hardman & Bechko on ‘Invisible Republic’

This interview, as always with Gabriel Hardman and Corinna Sara Bechko (this time about Invisible Republic) has several gems of insight.

In this Hardman notes, “I want to point out how lucky we are at this point in time that the comic book industry is a place where we can tell a long form story like Invisible Republic that’s aimed at adults. That’s no small thing.”
