Quick Hits | Chick Tracts artist Fred Carter passes away

Plus: Rachel Pollack, Luke Healy and the Siancong War!

Passings | Fred Carter, an artist whose work was seen by millions in the form of Chick Tracts, passed away earlier this month from heart failure at the age of 83. Carter worked anonymously for Jack Chick, publisher of Chick Publications, and is credited with drawing more than half of the Christian comic pamphlets. He also worked with Chick on The Crusaders, a comic that featured a white former Green Beret and a Black ex-militant who “went on adventures for Christ.” The duo looked a lot like Chick and Carter.

People | Mad Cave Studios has added two new senior editors to their team, Lauren McGrew-Hitzhusen and Chas! Pangburn.

Waid + Mora bring Batman + Superman (+ Seinfeld?) together for ‘World’s Finest’

DC resurrects the long-running title next March.

Mark Waid made his return to DC last year with a short Dark Nights: Death Metal story, but he’ll be back in earnest next year writing Batman/Superman: World’s Finest.

The new series will feature artwork by Dan Mora and will debut in March, but readers can get their first glimpse of what to expect in Detective Comics #1050 in January.

Can’t Wait for Comics | Run with it

New comics and graphic novels arrive this week from Jeffrey Brown, Dan Slott, RB Silva, Mark Waid, Grant Morrison, Chris Claremont, Nick Derington and more.

Summer event season continues this week with part 2 of Marvel’s prelude to the big Empyre event. Meanwhile, DC offers up the final issue of Batman before he jumps into his own big event, “Joker War.” There’s also plenty of new stuff to find from IDW, BOOM!, Image, Fantagraphics and more.

Gerard Way’s Young Animal imprint returns in July

‘Collapser’ and ‘Far Sector’ join ‘Doom Patrol’ at the pop-up imprint.

Singer Gerard Way’s “pop up” imprint at DC Comics will roar to life once again in July, as the publisher has announced more Doom Patrol and two new titles under the Young Animal banner.

“We are thrilled to revitalize Doom Patrol, and to present both Collapser and Far Sector, two books that push the medium of comics and their respective genres through uncharted territory,” Way said in the press release. “Readers can expect everything from high doses of cosmic weirdness and positivity, to deep examinations of anxiety and emotions while wielding immense power, to sci-fi explorations of authority and control and what it means to be a guardian while a world hangs in delicate balance. More fantastic comics outside the norm, as only DC’s Young Animal can do.”

Young Animal books to cross over with DC Universe

Doom Patrol to meet the Justice League in January, courtesy of Gerard Way, Steve Orlando and ACO.

At Comic-Con International today, Gerard Way, curator of the Young Animal line at DC Comics, announced that Doom Patrol, Shade the Changing Girl, Mother Panic and Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye will cross over into the DC Universe, starting with the Doom Patrol meeting Justice League of America.

The first of the four-part crossover, Doom Patrol Special arrives in January after the line takes a brief hiatus that starts in October. This issue will be co-written by Way and Steve Orlando, with art by ACO and cover art by Frank Quitely. It’ll also feature Milkman Man:

Comics Lowdown: Police look for owner of missing comics

Plus: Recognizing colorists, BookExpo reports, Chapterhouse signs with Diamond, Eleanor Davis, Gerard Way and more.

It’s 10 p.m. Do you know where your comics are? Police in Salt Lake City are looking for the owner of a stash of comics that was found, along with other suspected stolen goods, in a black chest under a tarp in the back yard of a local house. The items were turned up during a burglary investigation last year. (The story is a little convoluted.) The recovered items also included valuable pennies and baseball cards.

DC previews ‘Bug,’ announces ‘Cave Carson’ back-up at WonderCon

Gerard Way shares that ‘Doom Patrol’ lives, announces Mike Allred will draw an issue in July.

DC, Gerard Way share more details on the ‘Young Animal’ line

At Comic-Con International, the former My Chemical Romance singer showed new artwork for “Shade The Changing Girl” and “Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye,” and news of a pretty stellar back-up coming to Carson’s title.

DC Comics and singer/Umbrella Academy write Gerard Way plan to make the DC universe weird again with the Young Animal imprint. Way, along with writers like Cecil Castellucci and Jon Rivera, will put their own unique spin on several DC mainstays, including the Doom Patrol, Shade, Cave Carson and even Gotham in the new line of comics.
