Si Spurrier + Christopher Mitten get bloody with King Arthur in ‘Rampant Swine’

The duo reunites for a savage take on the Arthurian legend of Culhwch and Olwen, coming from Ignition Press in November.

King Arthur has been depicted as a noble king, a legendary warrior and the center of countless tales of chivalry. But what if he was just a brutal warlord surrounded by a bunch of equally savage knights?

That’s the premise behind Rampant Swine, a new comic from Si Spurrier and Christopher Mitten, coming from Ignition Press in November. The book takes its inspiration from the ancient Welsh tale How Culhwch Won Olwen and reimagines Arthurian legend as a bloody, psychedelic historical fantasy in the tradition of Conan the Barbarian.

“I’ve been itching to get my hands on King Arthur for years. He’s had it too easy for too long,” Spurrier said. “Rampant Swine is mine and Chris Mitten’s hallucinogenic, gore-drenched, resolutely horny take on the oldest Arthurian myth there is: How Culhwch Won Olwen. Our intention throughout has been to impale every cliche, slaughter every assumption, piss on every lazy monkish trope and have an absolute fucking blast while doing so. Rampant Swine is a historical fantasy full of self-knowledge; a tale which is annoyed by the toxic virtue-signaling of its own official version, retelling itself in a more mischievous spirit. It wears its fictionhood like armor. It slithers between the epic and the intimate, the mundane and the miraculous, all drenched in the visionary beauty of Chris’s ethereal pen. For those who loved The Green Knight or The Northman, those who thrill to the smart savagery of Conan or Red Sonja, those who delight in the interweaving dance of fact and myth, this book is relentlessly beautiful, charismatically violent, and utterly unique.”

Tim Seeley, Aaron Campbell + Ben Templesmith bring my Summerween nightmares to life in ’12 Foot Skeleton’

The new series debuts from Ignition Press in October.

So are you familiar with the term “Summerween,” which has somehow made it into my vernacular despite my best efforts? It actually comes from the TV show Gravity Falls, from an episode where they celebrated Halloween in the summer, which is ok, great even; I’m a big fan of Halloween.

But at my house “Summerween” is the term my wife uses when the Halloween decorations go out at CostCo, Home Depot and [insert the name of any retailer way too close to my house] here. It happens sometime at the end of June, and some years it can be scarier than Halloween. Now, we do not own the very popular giant skeletons that have infiltrated neighborhoods around the United States — we had a neighbor in California who kept theirs up all year and re-decorated it based on the next holiday — but we do have this monstrosity, among other decorations.

But that giant skeleton has become such a phenomenon that it’s getting its own comic, 12 Foot Skeleton, courtesy of Ignition Press, writers Tim Seeley and Aaron Campbell, and artist Ben Templesmith. I mean, who better to help channel my nightmares about Summerween?

Ignition Press announces ‘Mad Science Division,’ a science fiction/comedy series about budget cuts gone wrong

Dan Watters and Brian Level ask what happens when bureaucracy meets bioweapons research.

As their final announcement in the lead-up to the San Diego Comic-Con, Ignition Press has announced Mad Science Division, a creator-owned series by Nightwing and Home Sick Pilots writer Dan Watters and Poison Ivy artist Brian Level. They’re joined by colorist Lee Loughridge and letterer Frank Cvetkovic.

Mad Science Division is my first foray into creator-owned comics for a few years,” Watters said. “I’ve been champing at the bit to work in this space again, and this book is an explosion of all the things I’ve wanted to do. I wanted to make something mad, gross, fun and funny, and I knew Brian was the perfect person to make that comic with. This story delights me. If you like any of my work at all, I think you’ll like this too.”

The new series is about a genetic engineering and bioweapons development company whose R&D arm gets a new chief coordinator, and his job is to cut the budget by 30 percent. Little does he know what sort of genetic experiments fall under this division, and what will happen when the guardrails are down.

AJ Mendez, Aimee Garcia, Ildy Modrovich + Amilcar Pinna bring ‘East Side Saints’ to Ignition Press

The demon-hunting series debuts in 2027.

Ignition Press has announced East Side Saints, a new series co-created by writers AJ Mendez, Aimee Garcia and Ildy Modrovich with artist Amilcar Pinna and colorist Amanda Grazini.

The series follows 15-year-old Alex Gomez, who inherits her family’s demon-hunting business along with a bruja grandmother and a closely guarded family secret. Ignition describes it as a “coming-of-rage story” set on the streets of East L.A.

East Side Saints is a story about becoming your own hero,” Mendez said. “When the system fails, power is corrupted and demons roam the streets, the East Side Saints will get their hands dirty in order to save Los Angeles. They might not be the heroes you asked for, they might make things worse, they might even charge you for saving your life, but damnit they’re all you’ve got, and I hear they take Venmo. This story is a love letter to the misfits, the troublemakers, and the rule-breakers, whose rough edges are the weapons that will save the world.”

Quick Hits | Dark Horse announces a new leadership team

Plus: News on Ignition Press, Tillie Walden, Frank Miller, Jeff Lemire, Jeff Smith and more.

Following the removal of founder Mark Richardson as CEO back in March, Dark Horse Comics has announced a new leadership team for the publisher — apparently they’ll be lead by a “three-pillar leadership structure,” as revealed to Publisher’s Weekly. The three department heads are:

  • Tim Wiesch, Head of Publishing and Business Development,
  • Vanessa Todd-Holmes, Head of Publishing Operations, and
  • Melissa Teeman, Head of Finance and Administration.

Gaming executive Jay Komas, who previously served as head of Embracer’s Middle Earth Enterprises division, has been serving as interim CEO after Richardson’s departure, and it’s not clear if he’ll still be involved with Dark Horse. Wiesch was quoted in the press release, and seems to have the biggest piece of the pie, as his responsibilities include editorial, licensing, entertainment and games, product and direct-to-consumer operations. He is a well-respected veteran of the company whose experience also includes stints at Mondo and the Alamo Draft House Cinemas.

“I couldn’t be more excited about the future our team is building at Dark Horse right now,” Wiesch said. “I’ve been lucky enough to know a staggering amount of people here for 20 years and my entire world view on the industry was shaped with their influence. It’s truly an honor to be taking these next steps at the company that literally inspired me to work in comics to begin with.”

Ignition Press officially announces ‘Minotaur’ by Si Spurrier + Mike Dowling

The new title gets a preview this Saturday on Comics Giveaway Day.

The new series Minotaur by Si Spurrier and Mike Dowling will launch from Ignition Press in July, following a sneak preview that will arrive this Saturday on Free Comic Book Day/Comics Giveaway Day. The series features colors by Sofie Dodgson and letters by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou.

The series combines magic, technology, horror and capitalism in a story about a near-miss apocalypse that might have been more of a “hit” than people realized.

“Minotaur begins with Arthur C. Clarke’s timeless observation that ‘any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic’ – then runs with it,” said writer Si Spurrier. “What’s emerged, as we put this book together, is a strange and beautiful tonal confection. On the one hand it’s intimately concerned with superintelligence and emergent technologies, but it feels like nothing so much as a fusion of Hellblazer and The X-Files. Mike Dowling’s the perfect artist for this unique fusion of subject and mood, dancing between Mignola-esque horror and glittering capitalist modernity with equally chilling aplomb.”

Penguin Random House officially announces Comics Giveaway Day for May 2

The first ever Comics Giveaway Day will coincide with next year’s Free Comic Book Day.

Comics distributor Penguin Random House has officially announced Comics Giveaway Day, their competitor/compliment to Free Comic Book Day, the annual comics event that is now owned by Universal Distribution.

Last week we learned that Universal Distribution and Lunar Distribution had teamed up to bring Free Comic Book Day back to comic shops in 2026, following the bankruptcy and dissolution of Diamond Comics Distributors. They announced they would offer free titles by the various publishers they distribute, including DC, Image Comics, Archie, Dynamite and more.

Missing from the list were any publishers that are now distributed by Penguin Random House, and now we know why — titles by Marvel, BOOM!, Dark Horse and others will be released on Comics Giveaway Day, which just so happens to fall on May 2 as well.

So, everyone wins, right? Free comics for everybody, even if some of them will have a different events log on them.
