Mail Call | Jim Mahfood’s ‘Grrl Scouts’ returns in November

Image Comics has announced a new six-issue Grrl Scouts miniseries from creator Jim Mahfood, titled Grrl Scouts: Stone Ghost. The first issue will arrive in November.

“I’m extremely excited about this new Grrl Scouts series and I think fans and new readers alike will be very entertained and definitely get a lot of bang for their buck with this one,” said Mahfood. “I’m introducing an entire new cast of characters, expanding on the mythology of the Grrl Scouts, and handling every aspect of the production of the book: writing, drawing, coloring, and lettering, to make this a very unique experience! This series is for fans and collectors alike who are looking for something different and off-beat when they’re staring at that wall of new releases in the comic shop.”

Rosenberg + Boss’s ‘What’s the Furthest Place From Here?’ coming in November

Each issue will come in a standard edition and a deluxe one that will include a vinyl single.

Matthew Rosenberg and Tyler Boss, creators of 4 Kids Walk into a Bank, are getting the band back together for What’s the Furthest Place From Here?, which will debut from Image Comics in November.

The series was originally teased during the 2018 Image Expo and is about a gang of children living in the ruins of a post-apocalyptic wasteland, searching for hope and vinyl. It’ll kick off with a triple-sized first issue, and they’re also planning a deluxe version that’ll include a vinyl single with new music from Jawbreaker’s Blake Schwarzenbach and California rock band Joyce Manor.

“We knew whatever we did after 4 Kids would have to be something ambitious and crazy, but we also needed it to feel like something that only Tyler and I could make,” Rosenberg said. “I feel like we really accomplished all of that here.”

Zdarsky + Phillips team for the hardboiled ‘Newburn’

Image Comics will publish the first issue of the ongoing series in November, which also includes a back-up by Nadia Shammas and Ziyed Yusuf Ayoub.

Chip Zdarsky and Jacob Phillips will team for a noir detective story centered on the New York underworld in November, as the Stillwater writer and That Texas Blood artist team up for Newburn from Image Comics.

“I love the satisfaction that comes from crime procedurals, so the chance to do that in comic form, while crafting a massive story about a fictional New York underworld, was something I couldn’t wait to do,” Zdarsky told CBR.com. “And Jacob is the perfect artist for the book! His work is gritty and full of heart and he’s bringing it all to this book.”

Comics Lowdown | All hail the king as ‘King Spawn’ #1 sells nearly 500,000 copies

Spawn continues its big comeback with big numbers. Plus: news on censorship in Texas, Tim Drake’s big revelation, Kim Dwinell, ‘Chickaloonies’ and more.

Todd McFarlane’s Spawn is coming back in a big way this year, as the creator launches a universe of titles built around the character. Spawn’s Universe #1 set a sales record for the 21st Century for Image Comics, and it looks like the first issue of King Spawn has already broken it, with a reported 497,000 pre-orders.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, that puts King Spawn #1 in the same neighborhood as DC’s Action Comics No. 1,000, which has pre-orders of an estimated 504,000 copies, and Detective Comics No. 1,000 with its 574,705 copies. So it’s a respectable neighborhood.

Mail Call | Marvel’s Free Comic Book Day titles

Marvel’s Free Comic Book Day offerings for this year have been somewhat confusing — at one point Chip Zdarsky was mentioned as contributing — but the company has put out a press release detailing what you specifically can from them this coming Saturday.

Marvel will have two books, as previously announced — Spider-Man/Venom and Hulk/Avengers, both of which will tease upcoming storylines for the four titles represented.

As previously reported, Amazing Spider-Man is getting a new creative team AND a new person under the mask, as infamous clone Ben Reilly returns to take on the mantle of Spider-Man. One of the new writers of Amazing, Zeb Wells, will team with artist Patrick Gleason for a story featuring Reilly as Spider-Man. It will be accompanied by a Venom story by the new creative team of Ram V., Al Ewing and Bryan Hitch “in a glimpse that will show you just how twisted their upcoming run will be.”

Then, in the second title, Donny Cates and Ryan Ottley will present a look at their upcoming run on Hulk. And Jason Aaron teams up with Iban Coello to “present the dangerous new threat that the Avengers will face in the next arc of his hit Avengers run.”

Mail Call | ‘X-Men: Inferno’ teasers say ‘Trust No One’

Marvel has released three teasers for X-Men: Inferno, the upcoming X-Men crossover event that shares a name with a 1989 X-Men crossover event (not to be confused with The Trial of Magneto, another X-Men event that kicks off in August and also shares a name with a 1980s X-Men storyline.)

The teasers all build on the concept of trust, suggesting that you pretty much can’t trust anyone on Krakoa these days:

“An homage to the original house ads for 1989’s milestone X-Men crossover Inferno, Silva’s artwork presents all the major players of the upcoming saga and teases the day of reckoning that will soon be upon them,” Marvel.com says about the teasers. Inferno is written by Jonathan Hickman with artwork by Valerio Schiti, R.B. Silva and Stefano Caselli.

“I’m very excited that we’re finally getting to share with everyone the follow-up to House of X/Powers of X,” Hickman said. “The story is 160 pages over four issues drawn exquisitely by Valerio Schiti, R.B. Silva and Stefano Caselli. I cannot wait for people to read it.” 

Inferno #1 arrives Sept. 29.

Several of Kurt Busiek’s creator-owned series are coming to digital

‘Astro City,’ ‘Arrowsmith,’ ‘Shockrockets’ and more are coming to comiXology Aug. 4, courtesy of Image Comics.

Several comic series written by Kurt Busiek over the last few decades are coming to digital courtesy of Image Comics, including collaborations with Stuart Immonen, Brent Anderson, Carlos Pacheco and more.

The titles will be added to comiXology on Aug. 4, followed by Apple Books and Google Play at a later date.

“I’m thrilled to be consolidating my creator-owned books at Image,” said Busiek. “Readers have been asking us to make these stories available again, so we’re glad to have them all together at last, and in great company with the rest of the Image line. This is just the beginning, too—there’ll be new material coming as well, but that’ll be another announcement for another day.”

Brubaker, Martín + Vicente’s ‘Friday’ is coming to print

Image Comics will bring the digital series to a comic shop near you in November.

Ed Brubaker, Marcos Martín and Muntsa Vicente’s critically acclaimed, award–nominated digital comic Friday is coming to print, courtesy of Image Comics.

Friday is available digitally from Panel Syndicate using the site’s “pay what you want” model. The comic debuted last year close to the beginning of the pandemic, when Diamond Comics Distributor was shut down and new comic books were not arriving in comic book stores. Three chapters have been published so far.

“I’m so excited to finally see Friday in print. This is one of my career-favorite projects, and every chapter that Marcos draws ups his game to an unbelievable level,” said Brubaker. “I’ve never really done anything like this book before, a post-YA coming of age story with that beautiful mid-70s era look, and watching Marcos and Muntsa bring the town of Kings Hill to life has been astonishing. I can’t wait for a whole new audience to discover Friday Fitzhugh and her terrible Christmas.”

Mail Call | Shang-Chi’s mutant sister debuts in ‘Shang-Chi’ #3

Gene Luen Yang and Dike Ruan’s run on Marvel’s Shang-Chi has focused both on family and legacy, and in the third issue Marvel’s Master of Kung Fu finds out he has yet another sibling — and she’s a mutant.

Zhilan is a mutant warrior with a dazzling power: she can turn music into solidified energy. According to Marvel.com, she was exiled by Shang-Chi’s evil father years ago, and now Shang-Chi is seeking her out — as is the Krakoa mutant nation, which will lead to a confrontation with Wolverine.

Image announces ‘Frontiersman’ by Kindlon + Ferrari

The new superhero series is aimed at “mature—but uncynical—readers.”

Patrick Kindlon and Marco Ferrari, the creative team behind AfterShock’s Patience! Conviction! Revenge! miniseries, will team up again for Frontiersman, an ongoing series coming from Image Comics this September.

According to Image, the series will introduce readers to the Frontiersman “as he’s coaxed out of retirement by an environmentalist group only to find that being a spokesperson makes him a target for old and new enemies alike.”

‘Primordial’ by Lemire + Sorrentino launches in September

The award-winning team of Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino will be joined by Dave Stewart on a new science fiction series with roots in the Cold War space race.

The award-winning creative team of Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino will follow up Gideon Falls with Primordial, a six-issue miniseries that combines science fiction, the Cold War and test animals sent into space.

The series will kick off in September from Image Comics, nine months after the last issue of Gideon Falls arrived. Lemire and Sorrentino also collaborated on Old Man Logan and Green Arrow, and in fact will have a story in this week’s Green Arrow 80th anniversary special. Dave Stewart will color Primordial.

“Andrea and I were keen for our next collaboration after the success of Gideon Falls, but we also didn’t want to repeat ourselves,” Lemire told Space.com. “I think with Primordial we are trying something totally new and different for us. This book is part Cold War thriller and part deep space sci-fi, but all grounded in an alt-history take on the first animals sent to space. This book is full of mystery, adventure and intrigue and Andrea and I have both tried to push ourselves into new story telling territory.”

Tillie Walden, Mairghread Scott + others launch Skybound Comet imprint

The Young Adult and Middle Age graphic novels will get previews in ‘Skybound X’

Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment has announced plans for Skybound Comet, a new graphic novel imprint targeting Young Adult (ages 12+) and Middle Age (ages 8-12) readers. The line will launch next year with three original graphic novels by Tillie Walden, Irma Kniivila, Tri Vuong, Mairghread Scott, and Pablo Tunica.

Characters will first appear in next month’s 10-year anniversary anthology Skybound X.
