Smash Pages Q&A: Leah Moore on ‘The Doors: Morrison Hotel’

The versatile writer discusses her latest project: an anthology for Z2 Comics based on the 1970s album by The Doors.

Leah Moore has written and co-written a long list of comics including Conspiracy of Ravens, Sway and Swords of Sorrow; characters like Doctor Who, Sherlock Holmes and Dracula; and publications including 2000 AD and Heavy Metal.

Moore’s newest project is The Doors: Morrison Hotel, which looks at the 1970 album by The Doors. It’s more than simply comics adaptations of the album’s tracks; the book attempts to capture a sense of the band  at this moment and the state of the country and the culture unfolding around them as they worked.

The book also manages to show what Moore does so well and makes look so easy. Each chapter of the book is drawn by a different artist – which includes Colleen Doran, Ryan Kelly, Michael Avon Oeming, Marguerite Sauvage, John K. Snyder III and Jill Thompson – which shows not just Moore’s skill at collaborating with and writing for artists, but her masterful touch at balancing tones and approaches and styles, so that the book never feels like an anthology of disparate stories, but a book seeking to capture the music, its creation and the world around it in a striking way.

Moore was kind enough to answer a few questions about the book and how she works.

After 20 years and 100 books, Adhouse calls it quits

Chris Pitzer plans to close down the company he started in 2002 after publishing two more books this fall.

Chris Pitzer, publisher and owner of AdHouse Books, has announced plans to close down the “boutique publishing juggernaut” later this year.

For the past 20 years, AdHouse has brought a variety of creative indie comics and graphic novels to market from Joshua Cotter, Jim Rugg, Paul Pope, Hartley Lin, Zack Soto, Joey Weiser and many more. The recently announced Grass of Parnassus by Kathryn Immonen and Stuart Immonen will be AdHouse’s 100th release, and as it turns out, one of its last. He also ran a program called AdDistro, where he helped distribute small press/self-published comics.

Pitzer explained his reasoning for deciding to shut down what was essentially a “side gig”:

The first book will be published in 2024.

Drawn + Quarterly has announced that they’ve acquired two graphic novels from Australia-based cartoonist Rachel Ang — a collection of short stories provisionally titled What You Seek (Is Seeking You) and an original graphic novel titled Funeral.

“Rachel looks at bodies and our experiences in them with such raw and often haunting honesty. The alienation, dysmorphia, and microaggressions that people experience as their bodies move through this world, and out of it,” acquiring senior editor Tracy Hurren said. “Rachel’s cartooning is intuitive and lush, their characters are masterful. CCI announces this year’s Bill Finger Award recipients

Six writers will posthumously receive the award this year.

Comic-Con International has announced that six writers will receive the Bill Finger Award for Excellence in Comic Book Writing this year, the second year in a row that they’ve given the award to that many people. In most years, the award is given to two recipients and presented during the Eisner Award ceremony at Comic-Con International — which will again be virtual this year.

“Since we are not yet in a position to honor a writer who is still with us in a proper ceremony, we’re going to a long list of comic book writers from the past who we feel did not receive sufficient recognition or reward for their contributions to the field. As with last year, we have selected six posthumous awards and no ‘alive’ award,” Mark Evanier, who chairs the selection committee, said. “Each of these six writers left us with a body of work that the judges deem worthy of this honor.”

The 2021 Bill Finger Award recipients include:
