IDW Original ‘Golgotha Motor Mountain’ will bend minds next March

“… it’s probably the first Southern Gothic, action, sci-fi, drug-fueled body horror concoction ever made.”

IDW has announced a release date and a new artist for Golgotha Motor Mountain, which was one of nine titles they announced last year as part of the IDW Originals line.

Robbi Rodriguez will replace Ryan Lee, who was originally announced as the artist, with Marissa Louise providing colors. They will work with co-writers Matthew Erman and Lonnie Nadler, as well as letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. Finally, Nikola Čižmešija rounds out the team, who will draw “a backup short manga that is in-universe to the story.”

As for the comic itself, it sounds a bit bonkers.

“This book is genuinely unhinged, bizarre and unlike anything I’ve ever written before. In fact, it’s probably the first Southern Gothic, action, sci-fi, drug-fueled body horror concoction ever made,” Nadler said. “Something like Mad Max by way of Cormac McCarthy. Yet, at its heart, Golgotha is a story about two brothers at odds who have to find a way to trust one another in the face of absolute bedlam. As you can probably tell from my description alone, the whole team is trying hard to make sure this is like no other comic being released today, and that’s invigorating to be a part of.”

Hill, Ciaramella + Walsh adapt ‘Wolverton Station’ to comics

The Joe Hill-written story will arrive under the ‘Creepshow’ banner next March.

Author Joe Hill and artists Jason Ciaramella and Michael Walsh will bring one of Hill’s short stories to comics next year under the Creepshow banner — something Hill is intimately familiar with.

“I’m always glad to renew my acquaintance with The Creep and reconnect with the gleeful gross-outs that are the hallmark of Creepshow in all its manifestations, from film to TV to comics,” Hill said. “I wrote ‘Wolverton Station’ over a decade ago, working longhand while I traveled the UK by train for a book tour, and right from the start I knew I was writing a Creepshow kind of thing.”

Hill’s history with Creepshow started with the 1982 film directed by George A. Romero and written by his father, Stephen King. Hill appeared in the opening segment of the film, as the child punished by his father for reading a Creepshow comic. Several of Hill’s short stories also served as the basis for the more recent Shudder TV series.

Dark Horse announces the mech vs. kaiju comic ‘Dawnrunner’

Ram V, Evan Cagle, Dave Stewart and Aditya Bidikar helm the new title, which launches next spring.

Writer Ram V and artist Evan Cagle will team up for a new miniseries from Dark Horse Comics titled Dawnrunner, which tells the story of an Earth invaded by kaiju and the mech pilots who keep them at bay.

They’re joined by colorist Dave Stewart and letterer Aditya Bidikar for the five-issue series.

Sunday Comics | NASA’s STEM comic lifts off with a second issue

Today we look at webcomics by PJ Holden, Grant Snider, Melanine Gillman and more.

Here’s a round up of some of the best and most interesting comics we’ve seen online recently. If we missed something, let us know in the comments below.

NASA launched a digital comic back in 2021 about a fictional astronaut named Callie Rodriguez, the first woman to walk on the moon. Now the second issue has made landing on their website, where it can be read or downloaded.

The story is meant to inspire “the next generation of explorers,” which NASA has dubbed the Artemis Generation, as they work on a real-life project to land the first woman and first person of color on the Moon.

‘Parliament of Rooks’ takes flight from Comixology next week

‘Ask for Mercy’ artist Abigail Jill Harding writes and draws the five-issue gothic love story.

Comixology Originals is still alive and kicking, and have announced another new title for this month — Parliament of Rooks, a gothic love story written and drawn by Ask for Mercy artist Abigail Jill Harding.

“Parliament of Rooks is my homage to stories I grew up loving by fellow Brits like Neil Gaiman’s Sandman and Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights,” Harding told Daily Dead. “This is the first series I’ve written and drawn myself. It’s very ambitious, and I’m excited for people to read it.”

The Fantastic Four battle Atlantis’ past to save its future in ‘Giant-Size Fantastic Four’

Fabian Nicieza and Creees Lee bring a former ruler back from the dead to plague a Namor-less kingdom.

Writer Fabian Nicieza and artist Creees Lee will pit the Fantastic Four against Natlus, an ancient ruler of Atlantis, in Giant-Size Fantastic Four next year.

“As a 12-year-old who bought—and still has—the original Giant-Size Fantastic Four run which featured great Marvel creators of the ‘70s like Roy Thomas, Gerry Conway, Len Wein, Marv Wolfman, Chris Claremont, John Buscema, Rich Buckler and more, it was a thrill to write this issue!” Nicieza said. “I tried to follow in the footsteps of those issues by creating something big and new. I came up with a character whose name and history will have Sub-Mariner fans either chuckling and saying, ‘Why did no one ever think of that?’ or ‘They’ll want to drown me!’ I’m excited to see which it will be!”

Night Thrasher ollies, kickflips and noseslides his way into a new miniseries

The former leader of the New Warriors returns in a new miniseries by J. Holtham and Nelson Dániel.

Night Thrasher, the skateboard-riding rich kid who took to superheroing after the death of his parents, will return in a new miniseries next year by J. Holtham and Nelson Dániel.

The new series will give the founder of the New Warriors a new look and a new archenemy, while rekindling his relationship with fellow New Warrior member Silhouette.

Created by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz in the pages of Thor before jumping into the New Warriors series by Fabian Nicieza and Mark Bagley, the character is one of many that epitomizes that early 1990s era of comics. While it appeared he died during Civil War in the battle that kicked off the event, he was actually saved by The Collector, as revealed in Contest of Champions a few years back.

Everybody gets to be Venom in new ‘What If?’ miniseries

‘What If? Venom’ imagines different characters playing host to the symbiote, courtesy of Jeremy Holt and Jesús Hervás.

You get a symbiote, you get a symbiote, and you get a symbiote … Marvel has announced What If? Venom, a five-issue miniseries that’ll debut in February.

Jeremy Holt and Jesús Hervás will send the Venom symbiote on a “tour” of the Marvel universe, showing what might have happened if it used She-Hulk, Wolverine, Loki, Doctor Strange and Moon Knight as its host.

“Having the opportunity to play within the Venom sandbox is cool. Having the opportunity to bond five iconic heroes to the alien parasite is cooler,” Holt said. “In doing so within the What If…? concept, I’ve had an absolute blast crafting a linear revisionist history that’s provided me the latitude to introduce distinct versions of the anti-hero that we’ve all come to love.”

‘Dawn of DC’ continues into 2024 with ‘Suicide Squad: Dream Team,’ ‘House of Brainiac’ + more

The Jaguar returns to action in a one-shot next year

Keryl Brown Ahmed and Tango send the Mighty Crusader to Peru for a solo adventure.

Jaguar, the New Crusaders character who debuted in 2012, leaps into a one-shot this February, courtesy of writer Keryl Brown Ahmed (Big Ethel Energy), artist Tango (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), colorist Ellie Wright, and letterer Jack Morelli.

Zoologist Ivette Velez is the most recent character to use the Jaguar name; her predecessor, Ralph Hardy, first debuted in 1961 and passed the mantle on to her in a story by writer Ian Flynn and artist Ben Bates. This new one-shot follows up on that story, as Jaguar heads to Peru to confront a predator that’s killing off wild cats.

“The character’s long history and many iterations provided a great creative foundation for me while also leaving plenty of room to explore The Jaguar’s character in ways that felt exciting and authentic,” Ahmed said. “I’m very grateful to Archie Comics for entrusting me with her, and I’m excited to see where she goes next!”

Veronica + Betty help the Shield with her holiday shopping in this preview of ‘Betty and Veronica Jumbo Comics Digest’ #319

Check out an exclusive preview of a new story coming in next week’s digest from Archie Comics.

Archie Comics has shared a preview with us of Betty and Veronica Jumbo Comics #319, which will feature a new holiday story starring Betty, Veronica and the Shield.

In “Holiday Heist,” Victoria Adams, aka the Shield, needs help with her holiday shopping — something Veronica knows a thing or two about. Veronica takes our hero to an auction house, where the prices are a bit out of Victoria’s range, but I bet the two shady guys in trench coats will come into play. This story’s by Ian Flynn, Bill Galvan, Jim Amash, Glenn Whitmore and Jack Morelli.
