Dick Tracy will return to action at Mad Cave Studios

Michael Moreci, Alex Segura, Geraldo Borges and Chantelle Aimée Osman will bring the detective back to comics.

Mad Cave Studios has announced plans to launch a new comic featuring Dick Tracy, the legendary yellow coat-wearing detective who first debuted on the newspaper comic page in the 1930s.

Crime novelist and comics writer Alex Segura will co-write the title with Barbaric writer Michael Moreci, joined by No/One artist Geraldo Borges and creative consultant Chantelle Aimée Osman. Segura and Moreciwere tied to a Dick Tracy comic title at Archie Comics in 2017, but a licensing snafu put it on hold. In the press release, they, along with Osman, are listed as the “comics rights-holders” for Dick Tracy, which is owned by Tribune Content Agency.

“This has been a long time coming, and we are all so excited to bring our grounded, noir take on the Dick Tracy mythos to life at Mad Cave,” said Segura. “Michael and I have loved Dick Tracy, his stellar rogues gallery, and unforgettable supporting cast since we first became aware of the character as kids. It’s been a winding road to not only get the rights to publish new stories starring the iconic detective, and I’m so thankful that my journey with Chantelle and Michael brought us to Mad Cave. The stuff Geraldo is cooking up perfectly evokes the grounded, cinematic vibe we’re bringing to this origin story.”

‘Madness, violence, fire and blood!’ Andrew Krahnke lets loose on the barbarian tale ‘Bloodrik’

The three-issue miniseries begins in December.

Andrew Krahnke, artist of Tartarus and Outrunners, will write and draw Bloodrik, a three-issue miniseries coming from Image Comics in December.

The story features a barbarian named Bloodrik, whose hunt for food in unfamiliar woods leads to conflict.

“I came up with the rough idea for this comic in about 10 minutes, after I sketched Bloodrik for the first time. I knew I wanted it to be about a hulking woodsman making his way across a brutal landscape looking for food. Seemed like a simple enough idea. It would be another 10 years before I sat down to finally start drawing it,” said Krahnke. “During those 10 years of writing, rewriting, and re-rewriting, Bloodrik evolved from that simple idea into a story about how we see ourselves and the trouble we can get into when we let the idea of who we think we are dictate how we see the world.”

‘Underheist’ debuts in December.

Stray Bullets creators David and Maria Lapham, along with colorist Hilary Jenkins, will conjure up a supernatural crime story in Underheist, which is coming from BOOM! Studios on December.

“If you know our work then you know that we traditionally come at the crime genre from a very non-traditional angle with very non-traditional noir protagonists,” David Lapham said. “I often call them ‘domestic noirs.’ But with Underheist, we had this idea for a more straightforward story, centered around maybe the most traditional crime trope—the heist. Of course, we can’t do anything straightforward for more than five minutes, and very quickly all these twisted, nightmarish ideas started to flood in…”
