DC announces new stories, collection for ‘Death of Superman’ anniversary

Dan Jurgens, Brett Breeding, Louise Simonson, Roger Stern and more reunite for new tales about Superman’s death.

Several classic Superman creative teams will return to the character for the 80-Page The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Special #1. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of The Death of Superman event that ushered in a new, seemingly endless wave of event comics, the special will include new stories by Dan Jurgens, Brett Breeding, Roger Stern, Butch Guice, Jon Bogdanove, Louise Simonson, Jerry Ordway and more.

“It was great to be able to work with them and make sure that each team was back together again,” Jurgens said about the special. “It was Roger Stern and Butch Guice who were on Action Comics back at that time, and they could come back as a team. Louise Simonson and John Bogdanov were on Man of Steel, Tom Grummett and Jerry Ordway were working on Adventures of Superman, and Brett Breeding and I were on Superman. We realized we could get the full crew back together to do these stories.”

DC’s ‘Comics Are Fun For Everyone’ Panel features Superman, Blue Beetle and Bruce Campbell

A new graphic novel by Sina Grace and a surprise appearance from Ash Williams highlight the Comic-Con panel.

In San Diego today, DC’s “Comics Are Fun for Everyone” panel brought plenty of news on upcoming graphic novels like Superman: The Harvest of Youth and Constantine: Distorted Illusions, and also plenty of fun in the form of actor and writer Bruce Campbell.

Campbell was on hand to promote Sgt. Rock vs. The Army of the Dead, his upcoming miniseries with artist Eduardo Risso.

Static returns for a second season in ‘Shadows of Dakota’

Check out preview pages from the new miniseries as well as the upcoming graphic novel ‘Static: Up All Night.’

During the Jim Lee & Friends panel in San Diego yesterday, DC’s publisher and CCO welcomed Milestone founder and legendary artist Denys Cowan to the stage to announce a second Static miniseries titled Static: Shadows of Dakota.

Vita Ayala and Nikolas Draper-Ivey will once again tell Virgil Hawkins’ story and introduce a villain called Ebon. Here’s a look at the cover:

Here’s a look at the Paul Dano/Stevan Subic ‘The Riddler: Year One’ project

Jim Lee and Paul Dano shared a preview during the San Diego Comic-Con yesterday.

As revealed during the Jim Lee & Friends panel in San Diego yesterday, DC has released preview pages and variant covers for The Riddler: Year One, the upcoming Black Label project by actor Paul Dano and artist Stevan Subic.

According to DC, “Dano’s story provides an in-depth look at how the unknown forensic accountant Edward Nashton evolved into the menace known as the Riddler and came so close to bringing down the entire city.” Dano of course played the character in The Batman.

‘Batman: Gotham Knights’ video game gets a prequel comic

‘Gilded City’ follows a mysterious virus that turns Gotham’s citizens into maniacs.

During Comic-Con today DC announced a prequel comic for their upcoming video game, Batman: Gotham Knights. Subtitled Gilded City, the comic is written by Evan Narcisse with art by ABEL.

The game features Nightwing, Red Hood, Batgirl and Robin in a Batman-less Gotham City. And following in the footsteps of the recent Batman crossover with Fortnite, each issue of the six-issue series will feature a code for in-game items.

Turns out it was ‘Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths’ all along

DC announces a name change for its big event series at Comic-Con, plus more details on all things Dark Crisis.

As part of their announcements at Comic-Con International in San Diego, DC Comics has revealed that their Dark Crisis event is actually called something else — Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths.

The announcement came during today’s Dark Crisis panel at the convention, which featured Joshua Williamson, Daniel Sampere, Jeremy Adams, Meghan Fitzmartin, Tom King and Ram V.

“We’ve kept the real name a secret from the start because we didn’t want to give away what was happening in the middle of the story, with the return of the Infinite Earths,” Williamson said.

The event series by Williamson and Sampere was also revealed to be a sequel to the original Crisis on Infinite Earths by Marv Wolfman and the late George Pérez — although I kind of thought that was obvious by the name Dark Crisis, the inclusion of Pariah and the whole “Great Darkness” thing … but Williamson and Sampere have more to say about the connection between the two series:

King + Hester tell ‘the definitive origin’ of Gotham City this Fall

‘Gotham City: Year One’ will take place two generations before Batman arrived.

Tom King, Phil Hester, Eric Gapstur, Jordie Bellaire and Clayton Cowles will tell the story of Gotham City, pre-Batman, in Gotham City: Year One.

DC decribes the six-issue miniseries as “the definitive origin of Gotham City: how it became the cesspool of violence and corruption it is today, and how it harbored and then unleashed the sin that led to the rise of the Dark Knight.” It will feature P.I. Slam Bradley and the kidnapping of Helen Wayne.

“Having written a ton of Batman comics,” said King, “I can say it’s incredibly rare to write books like this, where you can add something large and essential to the mythos of the Dark Knight, as Scott did with Court of Owls or Grant did with the introduction of Damian or Frank did with, well, everything he touched. In Gotham City Year One, Phil and I will take you to a noir drenched past, where the secrets that made Gotham become Gotham, the sins that made Batman become Batman are finally and violently revealed.”

‘Onyx,’ ‘The Mighty’ find a new home at Image

Both titles will arrive in September.

Two projected originally published elsewhere have found a new home at Image Comics.

First up is Onyx, which was originally published by IDW Publishing in 2015. It’s a science fiction tale by artist Gabriel Rodriguez, colorist Jay Fotos and writer Chris Ryall. Today Image announced a one-shot simply called Onyx coming from Syzygy, Ryall’s venture with Ashley Wood that publishes through Image.

“Onyx came from the idea of doing a story that would be our love letter to sci-fi adventure comics from our childhoods and also ‘80s action movies, but ended up becoming much more,” said Rodriguez. “Mainly because our heroine came to life in a much deeper, more vivid and intriguing way than we expected. We didn’t just want to join her on this ride, we wanted to explore her psyche and her soul through a non-stop adventure set in a world as rich, thrilling and fun as we thought she deserved. Hopefully, our readers will discover in her a character to root for here and want to see more of in future books, too.”

Slugfest | Lemire + Sorrentino’s ‘Ten Thousand Black Feathers’ takes flight in September

A round-up of recent comics news and announcements from Marvel, Skybound, Image, Aftershock and more.

Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino kicked off their shared universe The Bone Orchard Mythos earlier this month with the original graphic novel The Passageway, and they plan to continue the story later this year with the miniseries Ten Thousand Black Feathers.

“The Passageway introduces readers to the Bone Orchard and now with Ten Thousand Black Feathers we dig in and really start to explore this new universe,” said Lemire. “This is a story of friendship, coming of age and imagination that is equal parts horrific, mysterious and heart wrenching.”

Image announced the first issue of the miniseries will hit stores on Sept. 14 and also shared a preview:

Another Robin flies solo this September in ‘Tim Drake: Robin’

Meghan Fitzmartin and Riley Rossmo will help Tim Drake soar in this new ongoing series.

Following a solo story in Batman: Urban Legends and the DC Pride special that collected it this week, Tim Drake will star in a new ongoing series, Tim Drake: Robin, starting in September. Meghan Fitzmartin, who wrote the Urban Legends story, will write it, while Harley Quinn artist Riley Rossmo will draw it.

The Warworld Saga ends in August, bringing Clark back to Earth

Big Daddy Superman will finish up in space, then return home for a crossover with his son.

The Warworld Saga, which took Clark Kent off planet while his son Jon Kent took over as Superman on Earth, will wrap up this August in Superman: Warworld Apocalypse #1.

Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Brandon Peterson and Will Conrad will present the final battle between the forces of Superman and Mongul’s Unmade Champions.

“Superman: Warworld Apocalypse is everything we’ve been building to with the Warworld Saga, with the final battle between Superman and Mongul, between the Authority and the Unmade, and the long-awaited reveal of the real mastermind in the shadows,” said Johnson. “There are some frankly shocking moments in this issue, and some huge reveals that will have long-lasting repercussions in the DC Universe.”

Sgt. Rock takes on ‘Army of the Dead’ in a new miniseries from Campbell + Risso

The first issue arrives in September.

Bruce Campbell, who has literally fought zombies*, will put what he learned to good use in DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock Vs. The Army of the Dead. Eduardo Risso will illustrate the six-issue series.

Campbell has appeared in numerous televisions shows and movies over the years, including Burn Notice, The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr., Evil Dead, Army of Darkness and most recently he had a cameo role in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. Risso is probably best known for his work on 100 Bullets, the long-running Vertigo series.
