Jeff Lemire announces ‘The Last Days of Black Hammer’ graphic novel

The writer teams with artist Stefano Simeone for the 100-page story.

As a part of Comics Day on Substack, Jeff Lemire has announced and launched The Last Days of Black Hammer, a new graphic novel with artist Stefano Simeone.

Lemire was one of the first wave of creators last year who began offering a paid tier for his Substack newsletter, Tales from the Farm, with plans to post new comics content for premium subscribers. Those plans included new Black Hammer stories and a graphic novel written and drawn by Lemire called Fishflies (the second chapter of which Lemire recently began posting).

Unlike Fishflies, Lemire says that The Last Days of Black Hammer will be available for free for all subscribers, not just the paid ones.

Jeff Lemire signs an exclusive deal with Image Comics

The deal will not impact the Black Hammer comics published by Dark Horse or the content on his Substack newsletter.

Jeff Lemire has signed an exclusive deal with Image Comics, his publisher for projects like Ascender, Descender, Gideon Falls, Primordial and more, for an undisclosed amount of time.

“Having worked with Image on so many projects over the last decade, I’ve come to appreciate the complete creative freedom and support that they’ve provided me,” said Lemire. “I’m excited to make Image the exclusive home for all my projects in the years to come, both solo projects that I will draw myself, and my various collaborations. Bone Orchard and Little Monsters are just the start of what I have planned this year and beyond.”

The deal does come with a couple of asterisks, though — Lemire clarified in his Substack newsletter that it will not impact the Black Hammer line of books he co-created at Dark Horse. “I have an exemption in my Image deal to finish the last few Black Hammer series as planned,” he said.

Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen blasted off for new worlds in the pages of Descender and Ascender, but now they’re returning to this world for a new post-apocalyptic ongoing about vampires at the end of the world.

Little Monsters will debut from Image Comics next March.

Little Monsters is a real departure from the space-opera and sci-fi of Descender,” Lemire said in his Substack newsletter. ” Much more grounded and character-driven, this new series will follow a group of child vampires who have outlived humanity and now live in the decaying husk of Los Angeles, lost in an endless wonderland of innocent childhood games and dramas. But their paradise is soon shattered, and their innocence put to the test, when unforeseen events force them to reconcile with their pasts, and with each other.”

According to the press release, the project will include multiple original graphic novels and miniseries under the Bone Orchard Mythos banner, starting with an OGN called The Passageway that’s due out next summer. It’s about a geologist sent to a remote lighthouse to investigate “a strange phenomenon.” That will be followed in the fall by a miniseries titled Ten Thousand Black Feathers and then another original graphic novel hardcover in 2023 titled Tenement

“These will be just the first few projects in The Bone Orchard Mythos,” said Lemire. “But that’s just the start. We are planning a vast mythology of horror stories that will last for years to come.”

Jeff Lemire joins the Substack Revolution, will syndicate ‘Fishflies’ through the service

Subscribers will also receive access to new Black Hammer stories.

Jeff Lemire is the latest creator to announce he will move his online newsletter to the Substack premium model, with plans to post comics and more through the service.

As part of his premium service, he plans to begin posting his next big project. Fishflies, through Substack, along with short stories set in the world of Black Hammer.

“I don’t even know what to call it really, ‘newsletter’ seems much too limiting for what I hope to do on this platform,” Lemire wrote in his, er, newsletter. “My intention here is to create something akin to an online studio; a new platform to publish new comics and a meeting place to share all my work in progress with you and also offer lots of exclusive new material. I want to create a direct link between me and my readers. So, this will be a place that I can share each step of my creative process with you and a platform to actually create and publish new comics too.”

Nguyen + Lemire team up for a tale about Dick Grayson’s early career

‘Robin & Batman,’ a three-issue, prestige-format miniseries, kicks off in November.

The creative team behind the hit creator-owned titles Descender and Ascender are trading space operas for street crime, as they team up for a new miniseries focused on the Boy Wonder and his bat-themed mentor.

Robin & Batman, a three-issue, prestige-format miniseries by writer Jeff Lemire and artist Dustin Nguyen, will debut in November. As the title suggest, the story will focus Robin, in this case Dick Grayson early in his career as a crimefighter.

‘Primordial’ by Lemire + Sorrentino launches in September

The award-winning team of Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino will be joined by Dave Stewart on a new science fiction series with roots in the Cold War space race.

The award-winning creative team of Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino will follow up Gideon Falls with Primordial, a six-issue miniseries that combines science fiction, the Cold War and test animals sent into space.

The series will kick off in September from Image Comics, nine months after the last issue of Gideon Falls arrived. Lemire and Sorrentino also collaborated on Old Man Logan and Green Arrow, and in fact will have a story in this week’s Green Arrow 80th anniversary special. Dave Stewart will color Primordial.

“Andrea and I were keen for our next collaboration after the success of Gideon Falls, but we also didn’t want to repeat ourselves,” Lemire told Space.com. “I think with Primordial we are trying something totally new and different for us. This book is part Cold War thriller and part deep space sci-fi, but all grounded in an alt-history take on the first animals sent to space. This book is full of mystery, adventure and intrigue and Andrea and I have both tried to push ourselves into new story telling territory.”
