C.S. Pacat + Johanna the Mad’s ‘Fence’ returns with a new miniseries

The first issue arrives in June.

The award-winning team of C.S. Pacat and Johanna the Mad are back with another volume of Fence, their comic series about an aspiring fencing champion published by BOOM! Studios’ BOOM! Box imprint.

Fence: Redemption will run for four issues beginning in June, and follows the original 12-issue series that ran in 2017-2018 and two subsequent graphic novels.

“Rivals clash swords, secrets are revealed, romance soars–and Johanna the Mad’s art takes everything to the next level. I can’t wait for you all to read what has to be my favorite Fence yet,” Pacat said.

Berger Books will adapt the opera ‘The Emperor of Atlantis’

Electronic Frontier Foundation Director of Investigations Dave Maass and artist Patrick Lay will bring to life a story written by two concentration camp prisoners.

While imprisoned at the Terezín concentration camp in Czechoslovakia by Hitler’s Nazi regime in 1943, Peter Kien and Viktor Ullmann wrote Der Kaiser von Atlantis, or The Emperor of Atlantis, a one-act opera that they never got to see performed. Now Dark Horse’s Berger Books will adapt the story into a graphic novel by Electronic Frontier Foundation Director of Investigations Dave Maass and artist Patrick Lay.

Death Strikes: The Emperor of Atlantis will also feature character designs by Ezra Rose and lettering by Richard Bruning. In addition to adapting the opera, the graphic novel will also feature an historical essay on the opera’s creators, as well as Kien’s artwork and photographs.

“Written in a concentration camp, Peter Kien and Viktor Ullmann’s opera is the truest form of artistic resistance, a middle finger to the Nazis and all authoritarians across history,” Maass said. “By adapting this fierce, genre-blending satire, we hope to introduce this nearly lost masterpiece to new audiences–and to challenge the tyrants of today.”

Steve Niles + Damien Worm return to IDW for ‘Brynmore’

The five-issue gothic horror series begins in June.

Steve Niles, writer of the first IDW comic in 30 Days of Night, will return to the publisher for a new miniseries this summer titled Brynmore. He’s joined by artist Damien Worm, who he previously collaborated with on October Faction (also an IDW title).

The five-issue series is set on a remote island plagued by a sinister generational curse, as a prodigal son returns to his hometown to reconnect with his daughter — and ends up battling “malefic forces beyond his control.”

​​“I’ve had the title Brynmore in mind for years, waiting for the right story,” Niles said. “This one just felt right. It has themes that I love to work with often: being an outsider in a strange land, the struggles of a single parent, plus a good dose of horror and scares. One of the big motivations for Brynmore was getting to work with Damien Worm again. I love working with him, and he’s really bringing out the big guns for this series.”

Marvel’s Pride special will introduce an X-Men team, a new Nightshade and more

‘Marvel’s Voices: Pride’ will arrive in June, along with several Pride-themed variant covers.

Marvel has announced details for this year’s Pride special, which will once again come under the Marvel’s Voices banner in June. And like previous specials, which introduced new characters like Escapade and Somnus, this one also will include several character and creator debuts.

Probably the biggest news is that the special will introduce a new X-Men title that will debut later this year from Steve Foxe and Rosi Kampe. Their story will feature Gimmick, one of the Children of the Atom, who you might remember as being teased as the X-Men’s sidekicks before debuting (they all looked liked versions of the original X-Men) and starred in their own miniseries in 2020. The only true mutant on the team was Gimmick, who was later invited to the Hellfire Gala by Storm. I don’t think we’ve seen much of this team since they were introduced.

Venditti, McKinney + Dalton pit six against the apocalypse in ‘Savage Squad 6’

‘… explosive firefights, impossible odds, and heroes who never say die.’

Robert Venditti of Flash and Green Lantern fame will team with co-writer Brockton McKinney (Jenny Zero) and artist Dalts Dalton (Heavy Metal) for Savage Squad 6, the story of an “elite team of post-apocalyptic soldiers undergoing the deadliest mission of their lives.”

They’re joined by colorist Geraldo Filho and letterer Micah Myers on the four-issue miniseries coming from Dark Horse Comics.

“Brock and I have been writing together for years, and we’ve been friends even longer,” Venditti said. “For the first McDitti collaboration, we wanted to bring all the fun and abandon of ‘80s-‘90s action films to comics. Savage Squad 6 is everything we love about explosive firefights, impossible odds, and heroes who never say die.”

Sunday Comics | ‘Heartstopper’ will return in April

Here’s a round-up of some of the best webcomics we’ve seen online recently — and news about them as well. If we missed something, let us know in the comments below.

Heartstopper, the mega-popular webcomic by Alice Oseman that’s been adapted into a series on Netflix, will return from hiatus in April. The announcement came on Twitter from Oseman’s official account.

“The Heartstopper webcomic returns to Tapas, Webtoon, and Tumblr on the 1st April 2023! (I promise this isn’t an April Fool’s joke lol),” the tweet read.

Paul Cornell + Marika Cresta satire Comic-Con in the new miniseries ‘Con & On’

The five-issue miniseries will arrive from Ahoy Comics in (naturally) July.

Paul Cornell and Marika Cresta are teaming up for a new comic about Comic-Con — Con & On is “a tragicomic satire of five decades of the world’s biggest comics festival, and the industry that parties there,” according to Cornell, and it’s coming from Ahoy Comics in July.

“This is a heartfelt insider comedy history of the roller coaster that is the comics industry, with bite but also with love,” Cornell continued. “It’s about the romance of every big convention, the bittersweet journey through time and success, the highs and the lows and the silliness. It’s the story of every fan and every pro and everyone who’s just trying to make a buck in the midst of extremity. Through the narratives of our large cast of characters we see, in miniature, the story of the last few decades of modern comics: how some things have changed and how some things have stayed exactly the damn same.”

Jaxxon returns in a new Star Wars annual from Dark Horse

The limited release comic will only be available at select conventions and directly from Dark Horse.

It’s becoming tradition for Cavan Scott to write a new story every year starring Jaxxon, the green rabbit who first debuted many moons ago in Star Wars #8 by Roy Thomas and Howard Chaykin. He was one of the first characters created outside of the movies themselves, and somehow has not shown up in a film or in his own Disney+ series yet. To which I ask, why???

Luckily, even after decades of inactivity, Jaxxon has returned in recent years thanks to Scott, who brought him back in the pages of Star Wars Adventures Annual in 2018, to be followed by additional stories and even an action figure since then. And this week brings more news about that wascally wabbit: he’ll appear in Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories Annual—Jaxxon 2023, which will only be available at conventions and directly from Dark Horse.

X-Men news: Uncanny Avengers, Hellfire Gala, Negasonic Teenage Warhead

Marvel announces details on several new projects coming straight out of Krakoa.

The Unity Squad will return in a new title later this year as a part of the Fall of X event, Marvel revealed yesterday during a virtual event celebrating the 60th anniversary of the X-Men.

Uncanny Avengers will return to store shelves starting in August by the team of Gerry Duggan and Javier Garron. But before that they’ll appear in a story in Marvel’s Avengers/X-Men Free Comic Book Day title coming in May, and the need for their return will be revealed in July’s X-Men: Hellfire Gala one-shot, which kicks off the Fall of X storyline.

“Everything we’ve been working towards in our third act is coming to a head this summer,” Duggan said. “The Uncanny Avengers have existed to provide an example of unity between humanity and mutantdom, and they will need to work extra hard at that now as relationships and friendships have frayed in the events of Fall of X.”

GlobalComix adds several new publishers as they prepare to launch an app

BOOM!, Image, Archie and more will soon join the digital comics service.

The web-based digital comics platform GlobalComix has announced publishing agreements with several new publishers, including Image Comics, BOOM! Studios, Tokyopop and Archie Comics, as they prepare to launch their first mobile app.

“I have waited for this moment for years,” said Christopher Carter, CEO of GlobalComix. “Not only are we finally about to change the landscape of digital comics publishing entirely, but we are also fortunate enough to do it together with a vibrant community of creators from both popular web and indie comics; and also many of the most venerable and well respected publishers in the entire world [of comics]. We will be bringing more comics to even more readers, worldwide, and doing so in a fiscally accessible way. With this, we’re paving the way for a vibrant and thriving ecosystem in which creators and publishers can make a sustainable living, doing exactly what they love, and that is one of the major reasons for why we’re doing what we do.”

Nicole Goux flies solo in the horror graphic novel ‘Pet Peeves’

Check out a preview of the new graphic novel from Avery Hill, which arrives in stores in May.

Nicole Goux has built a name for herself both as an independent force with comics like F*ck Off Squad and as a mainstream success with comics and graphic novels from DC Comics, Dark Horse, IDW and Simon & Schuster. Her latest graphic novel, Pet Peeves, started as an exercise in just creating something for herself, but has grown to be much more than that.

“Pet Peeves was meant to be a break from big projects at big companies,” Goux said. “It was a chance to stretch my writing muscles and to tell a story with no edits, no one telling me what do. Honestly, it was supposed to be much shorter than it is, just a quick story to refresh and re-inspire me between jobs, but I found that the story I wanted to tell needed more space and it grew into the full book that it is today.”

Pet Peeves is described as a horror graphic novel about a woman whose life is slowly being stolen away by “more sinister (though adorable) canine forces,” AKA the stray dog she adopts.
