Paul Cornell + Marika Cresta satire Comic-Con in the new miniseries ‘Con & On’

The five-issue miniseries will arrive from Ahoy Comics in (naturally) July.

Paul Cornell and Marika Cresta are teaming up for a new comic about Comic-Con — Con & On is “a tragicomic satire of five decades of the world’s biggest comics festival, and the industry that parties there,” according to Cornell, and it’s coming from Ahoy Comics in July.

“This is a heartfelt insider comedy history of the roller coaster that is the comics industry, with bite but also with love,” Cornell continued. “It’s about the romance of every big convention, the bittersweet journey through time and success, the highs and the lows and the silliness. It’s the story of every fan and every pro and everyone who’s just trying to make a buck in the midst of extremity. Through the narratives of our large cast of characters we see, in miniature, the story of the last few decades of modern comics: how some things have changed and how some things have stayed exactly the damn same.”

Jaxxon returns in a new Star Wars annual from Dark Horse

The limited release comic will only be available at select conventions and directly from Dark Horse.

It’s becoming tradition for Cavan Scott to write a new story every year starring Jaxxon, the green rabbit who first debuted many moons ago in Star Wars #8 by Roy Thomas and Howard Chaykin. He was one of the first characters created outside of the movies themselves, and somehow has not shown up in a film or in his own Disney+ series yet. To which I ask, why???

Luckily, even after decades of inactivity, Jaxxon has returned in recent years thanks to Scott, who brought him back in the pages of Star Wars Adventures Annual in 2018, to be followed by additional stories and even an action figure since then. And this week brings more news about that wascally wabbit: he’ll appear in Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories Annual—Jaxxon 2023, which will only be available at conventions and directly from Dark Horse.

X-Men news: Uncanny Avengers, Hellfire Gala, Negasonic Teenage Warhead

Marvel announces details on several new projects coming straight out of Krakoa.

The Unity Squad will return in a new title later this year as a part of the Fall of X event, Marvel revealed yesterday during a virtual event celebrating the 60th anniversary of the X-Men.

Uncanny Avengers will return to store shelves starting in August by the team of Gerry Duggan and Javier Garron. But before that they’ll appear in a story in Marvel’s Avengers/X-Men Free Comic Book Day title coming in May, and the need for their return will be revealed in July’s X-Men: Hellfire Gala one-shot, which kicks off the Fall of X storyline.

“Everything we’ve been working towards in our third act is coming to a head this summer,” Duggan said. “The Uncanny Avengers have existed to provide an example of unity between humanity and mutantdom, and they will need to work extra hard at that now as relationships and friendships have frayed in the events of Fall of X.”

Doug Wagner + Doug Dabbs light the fuse of revenge in ‘Klik Klik Boom’

The five-issue miniseries kicks off in June.

Writer Doug Wagner and artist Doug Dabbs, who worked together on a story for the 2019 miniseries The Ride: Burning Desire, will reunite on a new miniseries at Image Comics titled Klik Klik Boom. They’ll be joined by colorist Matt Wilson and letterer Ed Dukeshire.

The five-issue miniseries will focus on a mute woman named Sprout who was raised off the grid by her grandfather. After he’s murdered, she heads to New York City to seek revenge.

“I can’t wait for everyone to see the insanity Doug, Matt, Ed and I cooked up for this book. When this was all starting to stew, I told Doug Dabbs the muses were speaking to me about mixing movies like Fargo and The Fifth Element with the artistic inspirations of Robert Valley and Bengal,” said Wagner. “I wanted to try to find this balance between the old and the new, between neon cyberpunk and crime noir, and wrap all of that in a modern day action tour de force tortilla. The team didn’t let me down.”

‘Wild’s End’ returns from BOOM! this summer

Creators Dan Abnett and I.N.J. Culbard return to the anthropomorphic world they first created almost 10 years ago.

Wild’s End, the alien invasion story starring anthropomorphic characters by writer Dan Abnett and artist I.N.J. Culbard, will return later this year after a five-year absence.

Simply titled Wild’s End, the new series marks the fourth volume of the series, which first debuted in 2014. The third volume wrapped up in 2018.

“Ian and I are regular partners-in-crime, and I’m delighted to be returning to BOOM! Studios with him to create a new chapter of our all-time favorite collaboration, Wild’s End,” Abnett said in a press release.

Emily Carroll’s new graphic novel won’t arrive until August, but you can tide yourself over with two new comics on the creator’s website.

The first, A Pretty Place, is likely one you won’t see in print, or if you do, it won’t be the same experience. It’s an interactive comic about someone “visiting their lady,” and you can click around a map of the house to see what happens. If you’re familiar with Carroll’s work, then you can guess this is less of a romance and more of a horror comic.

Speaking of which, Carroll has also posted a fan comic for the game Bloodborne by FromSoftware.

Static teams with Anansi in a new special arriving in June

Static’s big summer also includes more issues of ‘Static: Shadows of Dakota.’

Static will team up with Anansi, the Akan folktale character and the god of stories, wisdom, knowledge and trickery, in a new one-shot coming in June.

DC and Milestone have announced Static Team-Up: Anansi #1, which reunites the two characters who previously met in the Static Shock animated series. The special will be written by Evan Narcisse with art by Charles Stewart III, a graduate of the The Milestone Initiative Talent Development program.

Chip Zdarsky + Marco Checchetto’s Daredevil saga will end in August

“This is what God has done.”

Writer Chip Zdarsky has announced via Substack and his social media that he and artist Marco Checchetto’s epic run on Daredevil will come to an end in August.

“This is what God has done” the teaser reads, noting that “The saga ends” in August. The imagery mirrors the original teaser that was used to announce their run back in 2018.

DC announces creative teams for ‘Steelworks,’ ‘Hawkgirl’

The Dawn of DC continues to move forward.

In addition to revealing the creative teams for The Flash and Wonder Woman relaunches coming in September, DC also revealed the creative team for the previously announced Steelworks and a new Hawkgirl title.

On their previous Dawn of DC graphics, which DC has updated each time they’ve made one of these announcements, the publisher has hinted that something “Hawk” related was on the horizon. Now it stands fully revealed:

DC announces new creative teams for ‘Wonder Woman,’ ‘Flash’

The two titles will celebrate their 800th issues before being relaunched as part of the Dawn of DC publishing initiative.

With both Wonder Woman and The Flash reaching their 800th issues in June, DC will release oversized, final issues of the current series. They’ll be followed in September by new series launched for both characters.

Let’s start with The Flash and that big 800th issue celebration. The current team of Jeremy Adams, Fernando Pasarin and Oclair Albert will be joined by several writers with some pretty heavy ties to the character — Mark Waid, Geoff Johns and Joshua Williamson. Artist Scott Kolins also returns to the character, along with artists Todd Nauck, Carmine Di Giandomenico and Mike Deodato Jr. — who will also draw the new Flash series kicking off this fall.

Marvel announces a new creative team for ‘Incredible Hulk’

Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Nic Klein will put the Hulk against an army of monsters.

The Hulk will get back to his monstrous roots in The Incredible Hulk, which Marvel will relaunch this summer by Phillip Kennedy Johnson (Action Comics) and Nic Klein (Thor).

The Incredible Hulk will see “a legion of the world’s most depraved creatures” coming after the Hulk, as the unite in “a fiendish new scheme” led by a mysterious immortal.

“The significance that we’re finally bringing back the classic title Incredible Hulk is not lost on me. It’s a tremendous honor, and Nic and I have the clearest possible vision for what we want to do with this story,” Johnson said. “Nic Klein is a genius, and working with him is pushing me to write a story worthy of his very best.”

Szymon Kudrański has ‘Something Epic’ planned for May

The new series starts in May.

Szymon Kudrański has big plans for his new series, Something Epic, which will kick off in May — plans so big you might call them as epic.

The Spawn and Punisher artist will pull inspiration from the many comics projects he’s worked on over the years for this new ongoing series, which he will write and draw.

“Over the years I’ve had the privilege to drawn many different characters—from the dark Spawn to the righteous Superman, through to self-justified antiheroes like Punisher, and horror legends in A Town Called Terror,” said Kudrański. “At some point, I wanted to create an epic plot where all the characters from these different genres and art forms shared a common story. The only logical ground to unite all these worlds and art forms was their source… imagination.”
